LIGHTERMEN ON THE THAMES

I am trying to find my maternal great grandfather and grandmother. His name was John Charles GREEN and he was a llighterman on the thames, possibly somewhere in the tower hamlets district/borough. She on the other hand, we do not have a name for at the moment but would love to know if there is a way of finding the records for either.
I believe that she died in CLAYBURY ASYLUM, as a result of witnessing the death of JOHN CHARLES her husband who was killed in an accident that we told happened on the thames and she witnessed, thus the CLAYBURY connection, I have already tried a couple of avenues and drawn pretty much blanks as the records have either been incomplete.
If anyone has successfully traced either of these two types of enquiries, I would love to know how. So far not coming up with much

Do you know where when John was born ?
Have you googled Dockland Ancestors you may find some info

Don't have a clue at the moment when he was born, came up with the guildhall libraries for records of lightermen but they say that they only have records dating from 1940 and that you would need to contact each barge company individually and as we have no idea where to start there could and probably are hundreds if not thousands of those.

Hi
Im pretty new to this so havent alot of advice but ive had a lot of leads by just googleing the names .If he died in a accident it may well have been reported in a paper.
This can sometimes be a long, boring and frustrating task but i found out were my gr grandadx 7 worked by doing this.
You may have to go through pages of hits (unless your lucky on the first page) but you never no what you may find.
Good luck

If it was such an horrific accident on the Thames it would surely have been in the newspapers - Do you have any idea of an approximate date and I will take a look.

Unfortunately I don't know when he died all that i know is that he was dead by 15/10/38 as this was his daughters wedding and i believe she was born in that last quarter of 1914

If you are working backwards and this is your direct line then you will surely have the name of their child who is your direct ancestor. If you buy their birth certificate you will then have the mothers full maiden name. From there you can find the marriage of this couple and their fathers names and occupations.

What definite facts/dates do you have so that you can follow backwards in this way? How old was John when he died? Have you looked for a death certificate for him. If you say the daughter was born 1914 then John will be on the 1901? What is the daughter (your direct ancestor?) name?

I dont understand what the Guildhall told you as they have records going back to the mid 17th century for lightermen and watermen.(I have these for my own lightermen/watermen) Look at Dockland Ancestors site, you can read all about this occupation and its history and how to discover more.

Just a thought - you say you don't know John Charles Green's wife's name, yet you have details of a daughter born in 1914? - This should link up VERY easily.

What details do you have?

Did they have any other children?

What was the daughter's name who was born c 1914?

This thread has been worked on and is half way to being solved here:

No criticism intended but this is being duplicated and it would be useful to refer to info on your other thread.

I am just trying to find my mothers uncles and aunts that disappeared when her mother died, SORRY TO "WASTE YOUR TIME"
I was asking for help relating to searching for records for CLAYBURY and LIGHTERMEN thought that this was the place to do that.
Will consider not asking for further assistance if this is the result.
Sometimes ancestry is much more recent and the effects matter to people that are living. I wanted to find out what went on before my mums birthday, she and her sister have wondered what went on for 62 years

I dont think anyone said you had wasted their time wearwa, only that the thread was already being answered on another board. As Dea has said above, if you post on more than one board it is a courtesy to let people know what is going on so that they dont spend time and merely duplicate research. People have tried to help you re the lightermen query as above. You should check out dockland ancestors and be prepard to buy some certificates to trace people backwards. There was no need for you to be stroppy, people on here are wonderful and work hard to help others but they do like to be kept aware of any new facts and information.

wasn't "stroppy" offended yes but not stroppy.
Thought that i had put this in tips as was looking for advice not a look up, stand corrected and reviewing use of boards as new people who don't know the rules are obviously frowned upon. Thanks to Janice who has been very kind and extremely helpful to me and kept me going this long. wasn't looking for a row just a way to help find some answers and some advice. this is too important to me to become involved in squabbles, will get everything i post proof read before posting in future. don't know rules and regs of posting regards courtesies and linked threads happy easter all
