Help please, I am trying to find the birth record of my father in law Joseph Leslie Kenneth Jackson (now deceased) He was born 27th January 1916 in London as far as we know. His fathers name was Arthur Frederick or Frederick Arthur as he was known by both names and we are not sure which one was his registered name. I have searched records but so far without success. Any help would be much appreciated - thanks
JayJay

Any idea of his mother's name ?

Jayjay

Jayjay Report 6 Feb 2011 16:57

Possibly Henrietta Isabella but we are not sure that she was his mother although she was married to Arthur Frederick or Frederick Arthur

Hi JayJay - this is the marriage record you have attached to his parents on your Ancestry tree:

London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921
about Frederick Jackson
Name: Frederick Jackson
Age: 21
Estimated birth year: abt 1867
Spouse Name: Henrietta Cattle
Spouse Age: 20
Record Type: Marriage
Marriage Date: 23 Sep 1888
Parish: St Thomas, Bethnal Green
County: Middlesex
Borough: Tower Hamlets
Father Name: George Jackson
Spouse Father Name: Samuel Cattle

Do you think Joseph's father had him with another woman, as you have Henrietta alive until 1939?

Jayjay

Jayjay Report 6 Feb 2011 17:04

Yes, this must be his death record as he died in Chertsey - but I can't find his birth record. I can find his marriage record in November 1942 to Nita Bessie Gray but the birth record is troubling me

Thanks
Jayjay

I think that possibly the woman who brought him up was not his mother as rumour has it that he "arrived" at the house or "appeared on the doorstep" and I can find no trace of a birth to a maiden name of Cattle either - I seem to be at a brick wall

Jayjay

Jayjay Report 6 Feb 2011 17:17

Well yes I suppose so so should I try to look with the son as the father but no mothers maiden name ?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 6 Feb 2011 17:17

On that 1911 I've just posted Henrietta had only had one child - Arthur F junior, born 1891.

That would have been a very big gap between them. Could Arthur junior have fathered Joseph who was then farmed out?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 6 Feb 2011 17:18

I'm wondering if Joseph's birth was originally registered under the mother's maiden name.

Just a thought JayJay - what does it give for his father's details on his marriage certificate to Nita?

if he 'arrived at the doorstep' syn. for illeg. then Jackson could be his 'adopted' name possibly his whole name, and his original birth name is unknown.

Is Joseph's father ........ Frederick Arthur 1870 , or Arthur Frederick 1892 ?

Is Henrietta ( Cattle ) Joseph's mother or grandmother ?

She would have been 46 when Joseph was born.

gland & Wales, Birth Index: 1916-2005
about Joseph Lg Bass
Name: Joseph Lg Bass
Mother's Maiden Surname: Bass
Date of Registration: Jan Feb Mar 1916
Registration district: Paddington
Registration County: Greater London
Volume Number: 1a
Page Number: 102 (click to see others on page)

this is one very long shor but the date of birth and place of birth are correct,
Joseph L.G. not K , but perhaps the name beginning with G was mispronounced and sounded like Kenneth. this child was born out of wedlock so could fit in - who knows if nothing else fails perhaps a bit of imagination ??

To All

Thanks for your help I shall now follow up these ideas and hopefully will come up with the right one. The father's name on the marriage certificate is Arthur Frederick but his father would have been born in 1870 to tie in with his age on his death certificate in 1947 and we know this to be correct. Henrietta was the woman who brought him up but we are fairly certain that she was not his mother. Possibly she was his grandmother and Arthur born in 1892 was perhaps his father. If he got married as Joseph Leslie Kenneth Jackson then wouldn't he have needed to produce some type of paperwork to prove who he said he was in order to get married ?

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 6 Feb 2011 21:37

Even when I got married in 1969 you didn't need to provide paperwork to prove who you were. You can call yourself anything you like as long as it is not for the purpose of fraud. The name Kenneth could have been added at baptism or it could just be a name that he liked.

The age given on death certificates is only as accurate as the informant's knowledge of the deceased so can be wrong.
