ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Please can anyone with access to the 1871 Census look who Edward Horan (approx aged 8 yrs) was living with in the Stockton/Yarm UK. Area

It seems his elder sister My GG Grandmother Mary Ann was born in Aberdare Wales (1858) and I'm trying to tie them altogether as one family born in different locations.
Any Help gratefully appreciated.
Thank You from Jan

Where was Edward born?

Can you not say if he was in Stockton or Yarm, these are not the same county?

There is an Edward born in Stockton:-
Births Mar 1863 (>99%)
HORAN Edward Stockton 10a 53

is the one you are looking for?
If so, then you could buy the cert. to see who his parents are.
Births Mar 1863 (>99%)
HORAN Edward Stockton 10a 53

Who were Mary Ann's parents??

Janet J Report 13 Apr 2010 17:43

Hello Catherine,
Thank you for your reply.
Stockton / Yarm are all part of the River Tees area near Middlesborough.
South Durham / North Yorkshire as they were then.
Unfortunately I had no input in the Governments decision in putting them all together in the 60's 70's.
Hence the confusion as to why I "Couldn't say" and I thought the help with access to the 1871 Census could clear that confusion.
Regards Jan.

Yes, I know the area very well as I was born in M'bro.
The reason I asked is that a search on the census would not be the same if it was Yorkshire or Durham.

If your Edward was born in Stockton then this could be him in 1891:-

Name: Edward Horan
Age: 28
Estimated birth year: abt 1863
Relation: Brother-in-law
Gender: Male
Where born: Middlesborough, Yorkshire, England

Civil parish: Longbenton
Ecclesiastical parish: Christ Church Walker
Town: Walker
County/Island: Northumberland
Country: England

Street Address: 78 Mitchells Buildings

Occupation: Labourer General

Registration district: Tynemouth
Sub-registration district: Longbenton
ED, institution, or vessel: 4
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
John McQueen 35 born: Scotland (Holder Up - Ship)
Mary A McQueen 33 born: Aberlour, Glamorgan, Wales
Lovenia McQueen 14 born: Sunderland, Durham
Mary J McQueen 10 born: Sunderland, Durham
Margaret E McQueen 7 born: Sunderland, Durham
Annie McQueen 5 born: Sunderland, Durham
John McQueen 1 born: Sunderland, Durham
William McQueen 3 born: Walker, Northumberland
Edward Horan 28

Lots of people born in Stockton stated M'bro in later census records.

Would this fit with what you already have?

Hang on!
Have just had another look at the census and Mary Ann is noted as being born in :- born: Aberlour, Glamorgan, Wales
So looks as though this is his sister.

I ask because the the 1891 census says she was born Aberdare.
And that he was born "Middlestone"
This is why it is so confusing.
I been all over the place with this side of the family.

I am totally unable to find any BM's or D's for these people.
Thank you
Jan

You still haven't said who Mary Ann's parents were?

Catherine

No Janet, the 1891 census I have posted gives his birth place as Middlesbrough and hers as Aberlour, Glamorgan, Wales.

The original scan of the 1891 census has been mistranscribed.

Mary Ann's birthplace looks more like "Abadour" ... it definitely ends with 'r' and has a 'd' in the middle, but is hard to read!

hello Astra
Please , I have not been ignoring you
I did a reply to you but haven't been able to find it to send and do thank you for your replies.
As you can see between Ireland, Wales and North east England and difference in names, just why I was unable to supply parents names.

I found this on familysearch:-

WILLIAM HERNE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 18 FEB 1856 Neath, Glamorgan, Wales
Father: JAMES HERNE
Mother: MARY

which I thought might be the christening of brother William with name mistranscribed.

I then looked for a birth for Mary Ann 1857-59 in Glamorgan and the only one I could find was this one:-
Births Jun 1859 (>99%)
HERN Mary Ann Neath 11a 488

The only births for William:-
Births Mar 1857 (>99%)
Hurn William Newport M 11a 170
Births Sep 1857 (96%)
Hurn William Newport, M. 11a 177

and Michael:-
Births Dec 1860 (>99%)
HOREN Michael Merthyr Tydfil 11a 289

Merthyr Tydfil is the reg.dist. for Aberdare.
