I am trying to find any trace of a man called Hart or Hartt Heaton in the Warrington or Leigh Lancashire area. He married Frances May b Lymm 1879, d Leigh Workhouse aged 36 1915; and had 2 children Jack Hart[t]Acaton[?] Heaton 1904 Warrrington, and Allan Hart Heaton b 1909 Warrington. Allan was adopted by a Methodist minister Rev. Unsworth possibly in Lowton. Any help please!
Sue.

Do you have the marriage cert? Or even a birth cert to give some idea of his occupation?

There is a Hert Heaton on 1910 USA census but I do not have the right sub to view

Probably too young with birth year of 1889

I'm not seeing a marriage of Hart(t) Heaton + Frances.

What evidence is there of the existence of a Hart(t) Heaton??

I think what you're looking at is the births of two children (Jack and Allen) to unmarried parents. Pending confirmation from the certificates, and assuming there is reason to think the mother was Frances May Heaton, I'd say the father was a man whose surname was Hartt.

Inclusion of the father's surname as the second given name of a child of unmarried parents was a very common practice.

But Frances May was already Heaton in 1911 as a single woman.

You got there first MC -- but I get points for deciphering Ancestry's noise. ;)The image does say Heaton -- I'll leave this here for anyone using Ancestry. Eventually, that entry should probably be corrected there.

Mike*, not catching your drift.

Frances May was Heaton, a single woman, in 1911 -- by which time she had two children.

She is a single woman by the same name in 1901.

She wasn't married. Hart* Heaton didn't exist.

My grandmother's sister was, shall we say, Mary Smith Brown.

Her father wasn't Smith Brown! Her mother was Brown, and Smith was the surname of the head of the household where the mother was employed as a domestic servant, whose son was the father of the child.

That's my bet as to what these records actually reflect.

Thank You so much for all this information so quickly.
I first assumed she was an unmarried mother then I thought she must have married but never found 'him'. Strange but the Farm opposite the Leigh Work house where she was an inpatient - not inmate and died- was Harts Farm! I don't always believe Cencuss; I know she lived with the Ellison's for a long time but Jack Heaton - Grandson- could this be true? I wasn't sure whether to trust the Frances - 'single' either.
So it could be that Mom was Frances May Heaton and dad was ? Hart*. I couldn't find a marriage but then so many are lost. I know Jack was alive 20 years or so ago and lived down south. I don't know if he was ever adopted and changed his name,or carried on living with the Ellison's.
I hadn't spotted the 1881 Frances - I will work on that Newton could be right. Allan became Allan Hart Heaton Unsworth and married Edna Mason. Anyone remember Masons the Confectioners on Bradshawgate Leigh?
Thank you all so much.
Sue

What's a little odd here is that the 1911 says that Thomas Ellison and his wife Mary Ellen have been married 34 years.

Marriages Sep 1876
Arrowsmith Philip Henry Warrington 8c 162
> Ellison Thomas Warrington 8c 162
Foster Annie Elizabeth Warrington 8c 162
> LOCKER Mary Ellen Warrington 8c 162

I was about to say you had had a stroke of luck -- there is a postem attached to Mary Ellen Locker's name at FreeBMD.

http://www2.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/information.pl?r=58183063&d=bmd_1293526012

But all it says is:

21/09/2010 Married Ellison Thomas

No contact info for the person who added it, e.g.

Now, that rules out the 1881 household I posted ... not for Frances, but I'd thought Mary Heaton and Mary Ellison might have been the same person. Apparently not.

Here is the Ellison couple in 1891:

Thomas Ellison 34
Mary E Ellison 38
Eliza Ellison 12
Sarah Ellison 6
Thomas W Ellison 4
James Ellison 1 - he is in the 1911 census with them
Peter Molyneux 42
Thomas Shakeshaft 73
Civil Parish: Latchford

Now, that's the couple Frances Heaton was visiting in 1901. But in 1881, Frances was with her mother Mary Heaton. This is Frances Heaton's family in 1871 in Newton, Lancs:

James Heaton 29
Mary Heaton 26
James H Heaton 8
Edward Heaton 6
John T Heaton 10 Months

So how did the Ellison couple become the grandparents of Frances May Heaton's children??

If they actually were, it could only be if one of their children was the father of Frances's children ...

"So it could be that Mom was Frances May Heaton and dad was ? Hart*. I couldn't find a marriage but then so many are lost."

But remember -- if Frances May Heaton had married, her surname, and her children's surname, would not have been Heaton. (And marriages from that era really aren't "lost". ;) )

You do need to get the birth certificates for both children, and come on back and tell us everything they say!

Here is Frances in 1891 -- we've seen the Eaton/Heaton confusion in posts on this board before, and in this case it was someone outside the family recording her name the way it was said.

Name: Frances Eaton
Age: 12
Estimated birth year: abt 1879
Relation: Scholar
Where born: Lymm, Cheshire, England

Civil Parish: Poulton With Fearnhead
Ecclesiastical parish: Padgate and Warrington
Town: Poulton
County/Island: Lancashire
Registration district: Warrington

That seems like the one. In the ' workhouse' as a child, lived very close to it then died in another. Sad but had 2 successful children! I'm sure it is the one because of the 'Lymm' birthplace came up again.
Thank you so much everyone. Strange - in the internet- there is a director of some where called Allan Hart Heaton Unsworth - could it just be coincidence, 100 years on?
