This is the marriage reference of my g g grandmother

Name: Emma Appleton
Year of Registration: 1869
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Basingstoke
County: Berkshire, Hampshire
Volume: 2c
Page: 321

On the marriage certificate she says her fathers name is John Appleton (deceased).

She married Walter John Braxton (it says Brexton on ancestry), who's fathers name was also John (deceased).

Can anyone find Emma Appleton? She's leading me a merry dance!!! Different census records vary but on the whole she says she was born abt 1849 - Sherburne, Hampshire.

Her death certificate says she 'died in a moment of excitement on her way to the railway station'! The mind boggles!!

Her husband I have given up on for now, but I feel sure the pair of them told a few porky pies!

I have all census records after her marriage - its before that I cant seem to find her.

Any help gratefully received and could possibly lead to my 'moment of excitement'!

Not sure what your query is, but the birth index I tried between 1848 - 1851 for Emma Appleton - Hampshire and there is Emma Appleton Oct/Dec. .1852 Basingstoke reg.dist Vol.2c page 137.

Thank you Marilyn - I'm hoping to pin emma down on one of the census records prior to her marriage.

I think she is in the Basingstoke Workhouse on the 1861 census

It states born Herriard, Hants, which is way out in the 'sticks' just off the A339 out of Basingstoke towards Alton.

Thank you for that Sue, I had a look on Ancestry and I saw she was single too!

Living all the way in the North East its difficult to know where is 'close' with the Hampshire villages so thanks again Marilyn.

I think the Sherborne St John she has on later census could be way off the mark, but I am sure her mother knew where she was born, as on 1861 census!!.

The problem I have Marilyn is that I dont know that it actually is her on the 1861 census. I would feel more comfortable accepting it if her father John had been listed! Very frustrating!

Someone has sent me the following from family search

EMMA APPLETON
Christening: 10 MAY 1851 Sherborne Saint John, Hampshire, England
Parents:
Father: JOHN APPLETON
Mother: REBECCA

Bishop's transcripts for Sherborne-St. John, 1780-1872

So I may look for Rebecca - honestly, no wonder I gave this up as a bad job ages ago and started helping others instead!

Thank you very much for your help.

Thanks Sue C - I have just posted that one! I really think you may be onto something with that one. My grandmother was called Emily and it was always said she was named after her grandmother but when I found her as Emma on all census records I thought maybe they got it wrong! Maybe Emma was actually Emily and it was shortened. My grandmother was always Emmy. Its a real possibility!!

Marilyn Report 2 Jul 2008 19:51

HI, I know how difficult it must be, but just to tell you that my husband's g.g.grandfather was one of 7 children all born to a single mother, none of them had father's listed on cert. but they must have all been given the line that their father's name was Thomas, even on some of their marriage cert. they put Thomas as their father, but their mother was living with her parents, referred to as single, when she died one of the daughter's was informant at death cert. and she listed Thomas as husband of the mother, so it does happen but it does not make it any better for you I know.
Did Emma and her husband have any children whereby the same names run in the family from her side at all.

Yes I quite agree with what yoou have been sent, I can understand you taking a further look at that. Well done whoever it was who sent it.

Ah Marilyn - I know how you feel too! My ancestors only lived to give me a hard time!!

They had quite a few children, they are down in later census returns spelt Braxton (Walter John being the head) in hindley, Lancs then later in Middlesbrough. The trouble is the rotten devils suddenly decided to change there name to Batt and my g grandfather who was born Albert Braxton (or Brackston) suddenly married as Albert Batt in Hartlepool! Where on earth did they get the name Batt from??

Strangley I can find a Walter John Batt who fits the bill perfectly on early census records and I just wonder if he thats what he was actually born and changed his name for some reason when he married.

Sue C - thank you for that birth record, I think I will send for the cert in the hope that it is her and I'm not giving myself a load of ancestors that arent mine. Actually, come to think of it...............................it may be a better option than my lot!!!
