Please could someone help me find out if John William Denby born c1895 in Ireland did actually die in WW1. I have been told he died in a submerine but have not been able to find his death in the military records.

I have him in 1911 with his father John William and his step-mum Florence, brother Herbert, half sister Edith and half brother Harold living in Sheffield.

I would really appreciate some help with this.

Thanks for your replies, no I haven't tried that site, just Ancestry.

After being told of other family deaths in WW1, I have checked Ancestry and found them but not him. I will check that site now.

Wow thank you all so much, the address in that record is where he was living in 1911 so it's definately him.

Still very much a novice so didn't know about the site. Never needed it before as found what I wanted on Ancestry.

Thank you again, it is very much appreciated.

Uh, Patrick, Flick did offer the same help as everyone else -- the CWGC item that several people found and posted pretty much simultaneously. (Chrissie said she was new *after* that info was posted.)

Maybe those with problems with other posters could contact those posters personally ...

Hi folks,

Well this thread certainly got diverted.

Unfortunately Patricks entry had been deleted before I got chance to read it so I am not aware of his comments.

Too many times now I have seen threads which have been turned into a 'slanging match' between members because one helper has critisised another. The boards should not be used for that, as Janey suggested those with problems with other posters should contact those posters personally.

I have been researching my family history for less than two years so have an awful lot to learn. I obviously wasn't aware that military records did not cover naval deaths, some may think I'm stupid for not knowing that but we can't all know everything.

Unfortunately with the written word, sometimes things come across in a different way to which they were meant. There was one thread which started to get very nasty. I spent quite a while putting together a reply, suggesting that it was time to call it a day with the thread and for folks to simply agree to disagree. Unfortunately when I tried to submit my reply the whole thread had gone, I think someone must have asked for a review.

I have always been very grateful of any help that I've received, and I always make sure the helpers know that, manners cost nothing after all. I also try to do my bit in return by helping others. Several times I've been able to find a record on Ancestry or Freebmd that someone has struggled to find.

For what good it will do I am going to put a post on the Tips board suggesting that if any member reads a thread they are not happy with, then to contact the poster by PM instead of turning someones thread into a slanging match.

Finally......thank you to all who have helped me find Johns death record. George, thank you for your help too. Like Barbara it's now in my favourites.

Thank you, George! There's my mum's uncle's grave. (She and my brother visited Etaples cemetery in France on a trip from Canada a couple of years ago, so we're fortunate to have pictures.)

Here's one in exchange, should anyone have Canadian war casualties in their trees. We have the "Books of Remembrance" for all war dead, and you can print off (or order) a copy of the ornate gilt page for an individual's name appears on, and also their personal info.
