Do you have William Duncan Graham's birth certificate - it will give the date and place of his parent's marriage. If they married in Scotland (which looks unlikely from Aileen post) Their marriage certificate would give their ages and details of their parents.

EDIT

If his parents died in Scotland then the death certificates would also give details of their parents- if the informant knew.

William

Births after 1909 cannot be viewed online at Scotlandspeople so you will need to order it and I think this can cost around £14.

Perhaps if someone is going to the Scotlandspeople Centre in Edinburgh they will look at it for you and send you the details.

Hi William,

As previously pointed out, births after 1909 cannot be viewed online at Scotlandspeople so you will need to order it .
These certicate copies can be ordered from Scotlandspeople at a cost of £10.00

Thanks Frank for correcting the price - I wasn't sure as I am fortunate enough to be able to visit the Scotlandspeople centre a couple of times a year for my own more recent events.

Hey Rootsgatherer,

I'm well aware of the price as I have spent a fortune searching Scotlandspeople but it's certainly worth it for all the information available.

I must make the short journey to Edinburgh some time to have a look in person.

Can you actually view modern up to date certificates BMDs etc in Edinburgh or is it just older data?

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 19 Feb 2010 11:12

Yes Frank, you can view all the newer certificates there. You can't take printouts of them but you can make notes. I have blank templates of the format to make sure that I don't miss anything. It only costs £10 for the whole day You can also view OPRs as well as Statutory records. Printouts of the older records cost only 50p each but it isn't costing anything to look at them to check that you have the correct one. If you are researching a common surname it certainly saves a fortune especially for deaths if you are not too sure where in Scotland the person died.

The centre is only 5 minutes walk from Waverly train station or from the bus station. I can recommend The Guilford Arms just beside the centre for lunch and I have been told that The North British Hotel does a good value lunch too but I haven't tried that yet.

If you are interested in any of the wills listed on the Scotlandspeople site then there is a building just beside the centre where you can view these and again you can make notes free. You will need a readers ticket for The National Archives of Scotland to do this but there is no charge for the ticket. If you look on The National Archives website I think it tells you what ID you need to take with you for this.

Good luck and I hope you take the trip soon - it's a great day out!!

Thanks for that Rootsgatherer,

It's good to hear and I will make a day of it which will probably cost me a fortune anyway as I'll have to treat the OH to a shoppimg trip and lunch to save her being bored!
That's a good idea with the templates so you don't miss anything.

Just have to wait for the better weather to arrive.

Thanks again,

Frank.
