hi,

i am trying to locate my ancester christiana and her husband peter hanley in the 1861 census's and onwards.

i have them in 1841 just married with no children.
in 1851 they have 4 children and christiana is listed as christian
robert hanley b1841 topcliffe thirsk
john hanley b1844 topcliffe thirsk
jane hanley b1845 birstall
thomas hanley b1850 boroughbridge

i have followed robert hanley upwards but can seem to find the parents or other children after 1851. i found a death index for christiana hanley in 1890 so they must be there somewhere and i'm hoping someone will be able to help me

thanks for reading

I couldn't find Wilson later, but it is such an unusual name, I found this burial date
26 Mar 1862 Wilson HANLEY 1+ Yorks N/R Marton, St Cuthbert

This ties in with the place of death you found for Christiana

wow i am amazed and truly grateful to you both i shall follow up this info 2moro as its a bit late now lol i've just found out that wilson was the maiden name of peter hanley's mother and in one of his siblings the name was used as a middle name until 2 generations ago on the hanley side.

i'm also amazed that linda was sitting so near to where they were! what a small world. unfortunately i have limited knowledge of yorkshire as i come from kent thanks to my grandparents moving down to london int he 80's lol but i use streetmap in order to get a rough knowledge of where places are.

many thanks

Samantha Report 30 Mar 2008 11:54

i think the burial referance for peter hanley in thirsk found by linda is actually for peter's father peter. cos peter was born in 1820 where as his father about 1792 so it is a lot closer to his age.
however i didnt have this date anyway.

i think peter hanley b1820 died in guisborough in 1870 this would explain why christiana is listed as married not widowed in 1861

Here is his burial
7 Nov 1870 Peter HANLEY 50 Yorks N/R Eston, Christchurch

eston is just near Guisborough, so is in that reg district. It is now a suburb of Middlesbrough as is Marton where the two children were buried

I can't see her in 71 or 81

I wonder if this is Peter in 1861, he is a married servant, working as a shepherd in a village not far from Sowerby where Christiana was. His name is in the middle of a row of servants,so the place of birth could easily have been swapped for one of the others. The one underneath says he was born in Topcliffe for instance I know the age is wrong as well, but it is the best I can find.
I looked to see if I could find a Peter Hanley b 1815 Osgoodby in other censuses, but I can't,so it could be our missing Peter
Osgoodby is in the parish of Kilburn, Kilburn records are well covered on the IGI and there was no Peter Hanley baptism there, another reason for not believing in the existence of the other chap.

Peter Hanley
Age: 46
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1815
Relation: Servant
Gender: Male
Where born: Osgoodby, Yorkshire, England

Civil Parish: Thormanby
Ecclesiastical parish: York
Town: Thormanby
County/Island: Yorkshire
Country: England

Street address:

Occupation:

Condition as to marriage:

His age is clearly written as 46 on the image, but I wonder if the census form the farmer filled in might have had a scruffily written 40 which the enumerator has mistaken for 46. If so that would put his birth at 1820 which would be correct

OK I know I am clutching at straws here, but I can't find him anywhere else

Can't see Christiana on the 1871, but found her daughter Jane. Jane married William Shakeshaft in 1864. In 1871 she is widowed with 3 daughters, and also has her sister, Mary A. Hanley b. 1861, living with her. But no sign of Christiana!

lol linda I was thinking exactly the same about our missing peter in 1861 and i also think this image is correct. likewise that death record. my mum was from eston/middlesbrough and i have a great uncle who still lives there so it may well be time to contact him soon and see if he can do some detective work for me. do you know if it would be possible to locate the graveyard they could have been buried in. are there many in that area or not. i know that peter's grandson i think was buried there and have a picture of his headstone and wondered whether it could be likely that they would be in a similar area.

http://christchurchandstgeorges.org/

is the website for Christchurch

Luckily the NBI disc says he was buried at Christchurch, not in the large municipal cemetery.

The only problem is that he probably never had a headstone, very few people could afford one. they simply had wooden crosses which haven't survived.
I have a genealogy friend in the area and I know some of her rellies are from there, so next time I see her lit up on Skype, I will ask her what the churchyard is like. If it sounds small, I may be able to look one day, but i can't do one of the huge cemeteries without a plot number

The website looks friendly and there is a good contact page. They may have a transcription of the headstones. if you find there is a headstone, I will photo it for you, I assume you don't live nearby

Samantha Report 1 Apr 2008 13:22

linda, you are correct in my assumption of not living near lol. i live in kent so have limited knowledge of yorkshire. my mum was born in middlesbrough and lived in eston until the 80's but we went back up there a couple of years ago but it had changed so much she struggled to get us around lol. i have a great uncle that still lives in the area and who we visited for the first time when we went up there. he took us to a graveyard near his house and showed us some of the family headstones, one of peter's son robert and his wife and their child who died young. i will contact him soon with all my new information and he may be able to keep a look out when he tenders the graves for any other hanleys that may be in there.

i will check out the website you gave

christina,
i have tried searching for the 71 census you said about jane shakeshaft but i cant see it. i may be being blind and will have another look lol but dont hold out much hope at the minute.

i also dont have daughter mary ann listed as a child of peter and christiana but thats not too surprising as i dont have the 71 census where she should have appeared with her mother.
