jessie Gillies born in Aberdeen 1845 married Bartholomew Kenny in High Church Glasgow in 1867. Bartholomew had moved from Sligo.
They settled in Jarrow, co.Durham.

Jessies father was George Gillies, I believe her Mother to be Christian Grant.
I believe I have gone wrong on my tree with Christian's parents whom I had thought were Alexander Grant and Catherine Murray.
I would be grateful if someone couls confirm this for me please.
Many thanks
Tanya

What does Jessie's marriage cert say about her mother?
Where did you get the name of her father?

Is this your 'source'?

A submitted entry.......not one taken from actual records.

GEORGE GELLAS

Spouse: CHRISTIAN GRANT
Marriage: 18 NOV 1845 Old Machar, Aberdeen, Scotland

You really need to establish the details of Jessie's parents....'believing' her mother was Christian Grant is not a good basis for research

Download the marriage cert from Scotland's people...........well worth spending £6.00 to get facts

Tanya

Tanya Report 3 Jan 2011 23:06

Thank you Ann for the Durham Information which I have in my tree.

Flick, thank you. I have checked the Marriage Cert for bartholomew and Jessie.
It states George Gillies-Foreman Hay Mills and Christian Gillies
**Grant Deceased. Looks like Mr. A Grant. I cannot remember where I got Alexander from.

I've had a quick look and I believe it says George Gillies - Foreman Flaxmill and Christina Gillies M.S Grant deceased.

I've also had a look around for George and Christina, but can't find anything on registers or censuses. There is a George Gilles Old Machar circa 1825 but he is married to Jane ?

I cannot find a birth for Jessie either, but that might just be me.

Regards

Catherine

I can't see Jessie on any Scottish census with the parents named

This is the only one on 1851

Name: Jessie Gillies
Age: 5
Estimated birth year: abt 1846
Relationship: Grandaughter (Granddaughter)
Father's name: Alexander Gillies
Gender: Female
Where born: Omachar, Aberdeen
Parish Number: 168B
Civil Parish: Old Machar
County: Aberdeenshire
Address: 35 Chapel St
Occupation: At Home
ED: 18
Page: 23 (click to see others on page)
Household schedule number: 123
Line: 6
Roll: CSSCT1851_41
Household Members: Name Age
Isabella Gillies 56
Eliza Gillies 34
Jane Gillies 31

She may not be Alexander's daughter (probably isn't).......only by checking the image on SP could you (perhaps) clarify that point..............it would say if he was Single....or otherwise.

Civil registration in Scotland did not start until 1855........the best you could hope for would be a baptism

Catherine Report 5 Jan 2011 09:27

Just found this entry mistranscribed for 1861:

Name: Jeffrie Gillies
Age: 15
Estimated birth year: abt 1846
Relationship: Daughter
Father's name: George Gillies
Mother's name: Jane Gillies
Gender: Female
Where born: Aberdeenshire
Registration Number: 622/2
Registration district: Springburn
Civil Parish: Springburn
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 153 Garngad Road
Occupation: Flax Picher
ED: 3
Household schedule number: 148
Line: 18
Roll: CSSCT1861_91
Household Members:
Name Age
George Gillies 36
Jane Gillies 30
George Gillies 9
Andrew Gillies 4
Jeffrie Gillies 15
Jane Gillies 9 MO

Seems to fit with the same George.

You may be right with the Christian Grant, but it is proving it that may be the difficulty.

Catherine

Ideally, you need to be able to verify the 1845 marriage.

Submitted records on the IGI are always suspect, but obviously, the law of averages must mean that some of them are accurate.

Looking at 1861, Jane would have been too young to be Jessie's mother, and the ages of the other children fit with the 1849 marriage.

There are too many Christian Grants on 1841 census for anyone to be able to say which of them is the one who married George, so identifying her parents is not really possible at present.

Flick

Flick Report 5 Jan 2011 11:07

Another possible avenue to explore would be Christian's death/burial

There isn't anything on any of the familysearch sites, but perhaps you could ask Victor on records for an NBI lookup. He only accepts PM requests.............

Failing that, .Aberdeen records office..........

Many, many thanks.
If Jane McLachlan had adopted Jessie? Would her marriage cert state birth mother [Christian Grant] or adopted mother [Jane]?

Catherine

Catherine Report 5 Jan 2011 21:54

More than likely it would be her natural mother.

Catherine

Flick

Flick Report 5 Jan 2011 22:25

Adoption wasn't an issue in those days.........even in England/Wales, it didn't come into force until the late 1920's

The girl would name her mother on her marriage cert.
