You can search the Parish registers at the County Records Office....and go back much further than 1820

You've asked about John Giles before, I think....

WHEN did he marry?

Surely it was after July 1837, in which case....get the cert

Try....

www.familysearch.org..........use advanced search and pilot search on this site

www.freereg.org.uk...not sure about coverage for Somerset ,but the info is available on the site.

Have you tried googling Ashbrittle parish records?...you may find they have been transcribed somewhere.....

If you have many Somerset Ancestors it may be worth joining their local family history society......... google for info on that as well.

Lorraine there are various ways to find records from before 1837/1841 on line.

Many parish records have transcribed by the Mormons:

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/igi/search_igi.asp

and FreeREG is working on transcribing all parish records eventually:

http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/Search.pl

I noticed in one of your other threads that you're not doing a lot of searching yourself. The sites above are free, but you may eventually want to subscribe to Ancestry or FindMyPast to use the databases there as well.

Did Louisa's surname come from the marriage certificate, or a child's birth certificate? Those records can be found at FreeBMD (although in the early years of registration not all births were registered)

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

and certificates ordered here:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

IGI has marriage in JAN 1837 in Culmstock Devon

How do you know it is the right marriage

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 12 Apr 2011 22:43

Are you in touch with the person who has

John Giles 1815 Ashbrittle, Somerset

in her tree?

1815 would likely be the correct year of birth, per the 1851 census.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 12 Apr 2011 22:46

The cousins from 1851, in 1841 in Culmstock, Devon:

William Berry 56
Mary Berry 34
Elizabeth Berry 9
William Berry 9
Mary Berry 7
Louisa Berry 2

Hopefully Lorraine will answer the questions about Louisa's surname ...

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 12 Apr 2011 22:48

IGI

William Burrey married Mary Oughton in 1827 Culmstock

Slightly different spelling of surnames

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 12 Apr 2011 22:50

There are no Giles-s in or born in Culmstock in the 1841 or 1851 censuses.

Except another Giles by marriage:

Thomas Giles abt 1811 Froom, Somerset, England Head Wellington, Somerset
> Mary Giles abt 1812 > Culmstock, Devon, England Wife Wellington, Somerset
Elizabeth Giles abt 1832 Wellington, Somerset, England Daughter Wellington, Somerset
Eliza Giles abt 1848 Wellington, Somerset, England Daughter Wellington, Somerset

Oh Lorraine, you have been sending me (and others?) private messages -- bad enough when the inbox function is working, enough to drive me right up the wall when it isn't. Please don't. Answer in the thread.

yes she was born there.the info i must have must be wrong as i have john and louisa having children named sarah, henry, eliza, william.
who are the others named on there.

Well, something's screwy somewhere, I guess.

Can you tell us *where* the information you have comes from, what child of theirs you descend from, and *what records* you have for the information you've given??

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 12 Apr 2011 23:03

Another PM ............

yes i am in touch with them [the person with John Giles in their tree] they had the same info as me which i got from the libaray so we pursummed we were correct.

Lorraine ...... "from the library" doesn't mean anything .....

From a census? from a marriage certificate? from a birth certificate? from a parish record for a marriage or baptism? ???

Lorraine

Lorraine ... John Giles was your grx3 grandfather.

Which child of his is your grx2 grandparent?

When I put this:

"yes she was born there.the info i must have must be wrong as i have john and louisa having children named sarah, henry, eliza, william."

I was quoting what *you* said in your message to me.

The rest of us found the household with the children Rosetta etc.

I don't see any such household in the census, although without having some kind of *dates* for the births of those children, who knows? We have no idea where you got those names!!

Who was your grx2 grandparent, child of Giles?
