My branch of the Gartlands originated in Monaghan, Ireland and my great great grandfather, Eugene (known as Owen) came to North East England around 1848. Married a Mary Clark (whose family disapproved of the Irish and Catholics) and they had several children including my great grandfather, Thomas born in 1862 in Sunderland. Eugene (Owen) seems to have disappeared from the face of the earth around 1870 resulting in the family being sent to the workhouse. Does not appear on census info. or death records. Thomas married Margaret Sweeney and they had several children including my grandfather, James who went on to marry a local girl called Ellen (Nelly) Armstrong. They had four sons and a daughter including my father, Thomas born in 1911. My great grandparents, Margaret and Thomas Gartland had a fish shop in Coronation Street, Sunderland until around 1921. If anyone out there has info. about any of these people it would be much appreciated. |
