i am searching for one James Foster, born 1879 and according to the 1911 census he was born in 'Start /Sturt Green' London. I have written to FHS in a couple of places around London, but know one has heard of Start Green or Sturt Green. It is not on Google or any of the maps I've looked at. I would be grateful for any help.

Thank you
Claudia

There is also a Stoke Green Buckinghamshire.

Are you sure its London? There is a village called Sturt just outside Devizes in Wiltshire. On IGI I have also seen it called Start.

1901 census shows only ONE James Foster whose occupation is 'Mason' - he is aged 19, living in Lancs

Who were the witnesses to the marriage? Any clues there?

And was the father by any chance described as 'deceased'?

Was James's occupation on his marriage cert and on 1911 census the same as in 1901?

Edit have downloaded the actual census and it is much clearer than the copy Claudia sent me.

It definately reads START GREEN LONDON and James is a worker in the brickworks.

Have received the actual census from Claudia and I think it could read Kent Greenwich or Kent Plumstead. There is a big blot or water mark over the place and the writing is VERY small. It could read Saint James London so very confusing...................................

What we need is his marriage cert to see who his father was.

They're living at City Garden Row in Islington. Father James is a labourer. Near City Garden Row is Sturt Street. I'm just wondering whether at that time there may well have been a Sturt Green as well.

I've received the birth certificate of a James Foster, born in Marylebone Workhouse in 1879, his father was a House painter. The informant was Martha Foster, Mother, of 49 Mothers Sun Cottages, James Street, Lisson Grove. There is no mention of Strart/Sturt Green. On James Jnr's Marriage certificate, his father was a Mason?.
However, through luck, I keyed in the word, Strut Green on Google yesterday, and it brought up that there is a Strut Green in Berkshire, its near Holyport. There is also a Sturt Green street, one researcher had an ancestor, named Adelaide Fry living in Sturt Green Street and has down loaded a map of the area. There is also a Charles and Tilbury families from Sturt Green.
Berkshire does not look that far from London. I wonder if I have found James Foster's Start/ sturt Green. Or, was this an establishment rather than a placename.?

Claudia

The James Foster and wife Martha are on the 1901 census and on the same page is their son James Foster a house painter. So that is not the one as your James was in Wales on the 1901.
