Hi, I have become stuck trying to trace my fathers side of the family. My fathers greatx2 grandmother was Mary Ann Finn (Born ABT 1850) and married John Barnaby. I believe when they married her surname was actually Murray as she was a widow. Her father was Dominick Finn Born ABT 1820 in Ireland i believe but i can't seem to find anything on him.

Kind regards

Well, unless you have other evidence for their fathers' names I would consider getting it. How certain are you this is them?

Dave Report 16 Mar 2011 12:54

I am fairly certain as i had someone else look at it and he found on someones tree the marriage was on 4th Dec 1876 in Lowestoft. going back from my dads grandmother;

Violet Leahy B:1916 married Albert Mons Shepherd.
Violets mother was Mary Elizabeth Barnaby who married William Daniel Leahy.
Mary's parents are John Barnaby & Mary Ann Finn.

I have spoken to the guy and the person he has spoken to who has the cert said at the time of marriage she was 26 years old (Widow) and her father was Dominick Finn.

Maybe your contact could email the marriage cert of Mary and John Barnaby to you? Might be good to see for yourself.

Jan

As soon as he finds it he is going to e-mail me a copy of the marriage certificate. The people in the census look right apart obviously from the surname. There was some confusion to start with because i thought it might of been Barnsby but assumed it was a transcript error and it says on the birth record of Violet Leahy that her mothers maiden name was Barnaby. i believe Johns father was called Samuel.

Andy

I'm don't know the first name of Mary's first marriage.

Jan,

I think i am crossing 2 different families here, my great grandmother Violets mother was Mary Elizabeth Barnaby born in Scarborough (ABT1979) who married William Daniel Leahy which points me towards the first 1891 census you put above. I think i'm just going to have to get birth certificates for violet and then Mary E Barnaby.

brummiejan Report 16 Mar 2011 18:29

I agree Dave, The golden rule - start with what you know! I think all the above are the same family - unlikely to be 2 John Barnaby's born Lowestoft and living in Hull! But Violet's birth cert is definitely where to start, or even her marriage as you kinow about that for certain.
