Francis married my gg grandfather Charles Stockton. They were born about 1821 and 1818, both in Bunbury Cheshire I think. They had a number of children including William 1865 my g grandfather. One of their daughters Louisa married a Thomas Nightingale and on the 1871 census it gives Martha Elson as Mother in Law (Grandmother). However other research and contacts suggests Frances' parents were Margaret (nee Howell) and Charles Elson married 1809. Frances may have had a brother Charles 1828. Francis and Charles other children I think were John , Mary, Louisa, Alfred, Martha, Elizabeth, Matilda, Peter, Charles, William & Joseph. Would really appreciate any information on the Elson family, confirmation of if it is Margaret or Martha as mother and any other siblings of Frances as its a long time between parents marriage and her birth and gap to brother. Thank you in advance to anyone who can help.

It's the 1881 census where she is down as mother-in-law, grandmother crossed out. But it means grandmother-in-law, surely, or it would be Frances?
In the 1871 census she is living next door to them, age 78, with son Joseph Elson, 32, groom. Does that help?
Thanks

Thanks Patricia, does make Martha look more likely than Margaret. Any ideas on making certain?

was Frances male or female, wondering if William's mum or dad?

Frances is female, sorry, just assumed obvious(even though it is not).

never sure as I have Frances' and Francis' in my tree of each gender

i have just had a look and found a marriage which could match the above idea of william and martha - william elson and martha walker 3/2/1823 st boniface bunbury, meaning that my frances is illegitimate or from a first marriage of william or martha and has taken williams name ????

The Charles Elson & Margaret Howell mentioned in you message were my Great,Great,Great,Grandparents from Bunbury.
To date i believe i have traced the Elsons back to Mosses Elson c1715.
The Elson family spread from Bunbury down the road to Crewe both in Cheshire, this would have been due to the coming of the railway in the 1820s, as Crewe became a major junction on the west coast line.
if you are still looking for more Elson information i think i may be able to help you.
