It might pay to purchase her marriage cert, to see whom she nominates as her parents.

There could be a number of reasons why your Lucy is not registered as Lucy Earls in S.A.

One reason "could" be..... that she wasnt born as Lucy EARLS......... Her mother may have re-married to an EARLS through a second marriage after Lucy was born, and Lucy adopted the surname from a step father.

Or she may just have not been registered?

Of course, one is surmising, and another good reason to purchase her wedding cert.

I do have Lucy's marriage cert, doesn't say much-

My Nanna said she had 2 sisters -Beatrice Earls married James Downing & Katherine (Kit) Earls married George Hill, they both married in WA. I can't find their births anywhere aswell.

Do you know when the family arrived in Australia, there is a possibility that they were born before emigrating. I noticed that Beatrice & Katharine both married in 1898.

Have know idea mel, but you could be right, they may have emigrated to Australia as there is no birth for them in Australia. Lucy was the younger sister so she was born in Callington SA (states on marriage cert) and her elder sisters may have emigrated with there parents.

Is there anyway of finding passenger shipping records to South Australia?

I noticed on Beatrice marriage in W.A she is Beatrice Annie EARLS.

The births of all those other Earls-s in Callington that Ann o' GG posted certainly seem coincidental. It seems conceivable that the family arrived there with children and had more children there, and since the older children grew up there, they regarded it as where they "came from". ... Or, Lucy was born to Ellen Margaret Critchley just before the marriage to Earls?

The 1881 English Lucy Earls (born 1877) is still in England in 1901, unfortunately:

Mmmm...O'h well...there goes that theory.

Trouble is none of these girls births are registered in any State.....Vic. N.S.W, Q.LD, TAS, W.A......and also checked New Zealand ( nothing )

From cd....1842 to 1906 births in S.A there is only one child born ( with Joseph EARLS ) as father.
A Mary Ann EARLS in 1858


Checked South Australia shipping ( incoming ) but found only one Joseph Earls in 1854 aged 34 with wife and two children from Wicklow Ireland. ....but not a Beatrice or Katharine.

That tree on Ancestry.com is mine, I'm have a big question mark on Mary & Jane not sure now if they relate to Lucy, Kit & Beatrice. I have better delete Mary & Jane off my tree. Yes, that photo is of lucy before she married William Henry Broadribb in 1912.

Tony, that was some good detective work you found with the 1881 census. And thank you Julcoe for looking in the 1891 census to rule that family out. Oh well!!! She is a tough one to crack.
