I am trying to find details of my ggrandfather. My grandfather was born Henry Dymond in exeter 1896. He went by the name of William Henry Rose (Rose his stepfathers surname), His mother was Edith Dymond born 1874.

thankyou for your quick reply, according to my grandfather's death certificate he was born in St Thomas Exeter on 31/12/1896 as Henry Dymond, but I can find no record of this. According to the 1901 census he was 4 yrs old which would tie in with the information you have (apart from the month)
My aunt's/ uncles are adamant his birthday was 31st Dec.
His mother Edith Emily Dymond married William John Rose in 1900, according to the information you have sent to me, is it likeley she was also married to Edwin Charles Edwards in 1900?
Also does this mean William John Rose was married to Rhoda Stamp

That's him!,(Harry Dymond) I just can't seem to be able to trace his birth or who his real father is.

Martyn, if he was born Dec. 31, 1896 his birth wouldn't have been registered till the March quarter 1897.
Also the other 2 names on the marriage register are not related to your couple. They're just another couple registered on the same page.

The only way to find the father is to buy the birth certificate.


I can't see a possible marriage for Edith Emily before the marriage to William John Rose but perhaps I'm just missing it!

As a matter of interest to you have Edith's marriage certificate to William John Rose? If you could post her father's name and occupation it may help - even to identify her on earlier census records.

That's the family (1911) although it seem's my grandad had flown the nest by then aged about 15. Why bdoes each census have differing dates of birth, spellings of name etc?. It's all very confusing.
I'm still unable to find my grandfathers real father & I can't seem to find any war record either. I know he served during 1914-18 in i think the Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry. I have searched under the following names;
Henry Dymond, Harry Dymond, William Dymond, Henry Rose, William Henry Rose & harry Rose but to no avail.

I'm not sure who Edith's parents were although according to the 1901 census she was born in Hockland aka Hawkerland. She married William John Rose in Exeter in 1900. Hope this helps

You need Edith's marriage certificate to find out her father's name.

If her maiden name was Dymond, you have very little hope of identifying the father of her child

The best way to find Edith's father is from the marriage certificate and the only way to find Henry's father is from the birth certificate- assuming that there is a father named on the birth certificate. Really, if you are going to do this properly then the best way is buying the certificates. Census records are often mis-transcribed and people often put the name they are known by or use rather than their birth name (your William John Rose is an example of this). And of course, people lied about their ages and not just the women!!

Regarding Henry's war record, I believe that Ancestry.co.uk are still working their way through the records.

would anyone have a copy of 1911 census?, Rootgatherer very kindly let me have details of the Rose's living in Exeter, but my grandfather aged about 15 wasn't there. I know he was living in Exeter at the time, but do not know the address. He would have been known as Henry Dymond, William Henry Dymond, William Henry Rose Or Henry Rose.
