I am trying to find details on a Benjamin Dunkerley, born circa 1890. Apparently he did live in Sholver Lane, Moorside, Oldham at one stage in his later life.
This person is my great grandfather by blood, however he never marries my Great Grand mother and it seems as if it was an affair.

Grandmother name was Margaret Minton (Sharples at the time).
The thing is, Mr Sharples was in the Army and went away for extended periods of time. During this time, Mrs Sharples got intimate with Ben Dunkerley. Mr Sharples comes back and my grandfather is adopted.
Ben Dunkerley is not on the birth Certificate, the fathers name is blank. The certificate does have Dunkerley as the middle name, as reference to his father by the mother.

This Benjamin would appear to be a likely 'culprit' - Living at Sholver Lane which you mention above on 1901, though he was a little older than the one suggested above:

He is on 1891 twice - once, again with his grandmother, and also with his parents Alfred + Elizabeth (This is not uncommon).
This is the marriage of Alfred + Elizabeth:

Dea, I think you have hit the jackpot!
Did you find this information on Genes, or another site, as I have searched a lot for Ben Dunkerley, but could not find him at the Sholver Lane address

OOOpss - sorry Steven,
I had to go off for a while and now have to go and cook a barbecue!!
I am sure this is the one - let me know what you need next.
I will be back later,
Dea x
p.s. - I don't use Genes for research - far too expensive!!
Most of this was from Ancestry!!!!
+ BMd from FreeBmd + Lancs Bmd

I am a gold member on Genes, but have already noticed that the search for people on here is rubbish comparred to other sites.
Thanks ever so much for finding Ben. Is it best to sign up to ancestry?

'Personally speaking' Steven, I would say yes!
Ancestry is the best value I have found.
I also use another couple of sites for diffent things but I don't think I could manage without an Ancestry sub!!
'My' opinion only but I think many others would agree.

P.S. - Steven,
I have never been able to work out what a 'gold member' on Genes was - I am not being 'funny' but I was offered this a long time ago and when I tried to find out what it was, it just said I was 'upgraded' already??? and could send it to a friend??
I never looked much further but am curious to know what it means and how much it costs?
Can you enlighten me?
Thanks,
Dea x

I pay £35 for 6 months membership, which allows me to search the census etc.
Whilst I thought this was great, it appears not as great as I first thought! Even these community sections are not that good, as you do not get alerted when someone replies to your post (unless I am missing something).
I think I will join ancestry as well!
Hope you have a good BBQ

Good barbecue thanks, though it got a bit 'cool' so we ate it indoors
Ancestry is much better value - census up to 1901, Bmd's, Army records + much more - I think it is about £79 per year. ??
Anyway, lot more to offer, + other people's trees and connections.
Go for it but INSTEAD of rather then in addition to GR. (Gold)

I agree with Dea, Steven. I couldn't have managed without my Ancestry subscription (I get it as a Christmas present every year).
Why not try their 14 day free trial first to get an idea of how much stuff they have.

I agree with Dea and Kathleen
I couldn't do without my ancestry subscription.
I have been a member of GR since 2003, and will keep this subscritpion just for these Community Boards. I pay £9.95 per year
The problem with the Gold membership is that in fact GR do not carry many of the records themselves ....... they just re-direct you to other sites! There is some debate amongst members as to how many they carry. I myself believe they still carry very few.
Nor do they they tell you when there have been replies to a thread ....... only if someone sends you a pm does GR send you an email to say there is a message waiting.
However, once you realise that you have to look at the left of the screen to the heading Tools, and within that box to My Threads, and that you have to click on My Threads to get a listing of ALL threads you have started or on which you have posted ....... then I think the Community Boards work very well indeed.
Nor do they tell you that all the help provided on the site is provided by other members using their own subscriptions on other sites!!
sylvia who was born and grew up in Oldham! (not near Sholver Lane though!!)
