John and William Cruickshank born in India

Dorothy Report 6 Sep 2010 20:59

John may have been born in Surrey, William in India - I think their father was in the Army - John and William were both soldiers. I have them together in the 1911 Census, but whether William was visiting or living with his brother I dont know. I know John's history from then to his death in 1940 in Plymouth. I dont know how to go about finding them in India - I have tried several sites that give genealogical info about people born in India but cant find them.

Yes, thats them. Kathleen Maud is my grandmother, which is why I have John Henry's history subsequent to 1911.

Thank you Ann of GreenGables: unfortunately these Williams are not mine: the dates dont fit, and William was unmarried in the 1911 census. I have some hopes of William and Joanna. I've had a look in FIBIS and cant find John or William.

I know John was in Dublin in 1890, when Kathleen Maud was born (Regimental baptisms) but that's all I have found.

I guess it's trawling through the Army records.

Dorothy Report 6 Sep 2010 23:15

It looks interesting, Elouise, I dont know why FIBIS should produce that for you and not for me. I wish I knew anything at all about John and William: all I have is my mother's very vague memories of things she was told (it's not her family)

I would be surprised if their father was an officer, but I'm not ruling it out, and will look into this family.

Thank you for looking it up for me.

Dorothy

All i did was go to the serach and put in the surname ....it comes up with a list of things that have that surname in .....in a few different areas ....
so i just had a look through most of them for dates around the ones given in the census....

this is the page i did the search on (top left handside)

Aha! Found it this time. Thank you sooo much: now I see I was being too precise about my searching. I will look at every entry.

My goodness, JaneyCanuck, that seems to be it: look at John Henry and William Pirie. And some half-siblings too (I like to note siblings: you never know where they will turn up)

Thank you.

You're welcome, but Elouise did start it. I was going to accept the report of absence of resutlts at FIBIS, but she persevered. ;)

You can get the full details for the births/baptisms at the pilot.familysearch site -- that's where the William Pirie baptism that safc posted earlier came from too.

Thank you all - I've been plodding about getting nowhere. I've learned how to search the sites more efficiently - which, considering how much more I have to do, is probably even more useful than finding John Henry.

Thank you all once more for undoing my knots for me!

i have now manged to find details of his mum, dad and brother

Thanks Again

And Doroty glad t have helped....when I get a bee in my bonnet it takes a while for me to give up!

But Elouise, why did you delete the FIBIS record that started us off?? It leaves the thread a little motheaten and incoherent ...

I only started using pilot.familysearch a few weeks ago after FannyByGaslight got disgusted with me for not finding my aunt's birth in Ireland. ;) I then found the marriage of my grx3 grparents and birth of my grx2 grfather that I'd been wanting for five years, just last month. Quite the goldmine and I'm glad to pass it on!
