Re: St Paul's St record.........

Any birth or father?

Jonesey Report 10 Mar 2011 15:37

It sometimes pays to start at the other end, I.E. someone's death.

When and where did William Croft die? The registration of his death may give more accurate indication of exactly when he was born, possibly even the actual date if he died later than the mid 1960's.

This may be the Willian C Croft shown in the 1901 and 1911 census records above:

Name: William Charles Croft
Birth Date: 20 Aug 1895
Death Registration Month/Year: 1979
Registration district: Cheltenham
Inferred County: Gloucestershire

Brummie jan: occupation was carpenter.

Jonesey: Cant find a death of William. Got death of his wife Rose in 1961.

No second initial on the marriage, Jonesy

Jonesey Report 10 Mar 2011 15:48

I note that William and Rose's children were all born in Cheltenham and the Rose death that you have found was also in Cheltenham. It seems quite possible therefore that may also have been where William ended his days.

Flick: I agree there but then the 2nd initial shown for Rose appears to be wrong. On the marriage record it is shown as "A" but in reality I think that it should have been "H" for Hannah.

Flick: youre right on the name Rose was born rose hannah and on the marriage certificate she is rosen anna, i was confused.

Mel: thanks

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 10 Mar 2011 16:07

Mel,

If the Ellen on that marriage is the same Ellen as shown on the 1901 and 1911 census records then she would only have been about 8 years old at the time of her marriage to Arthur Croft.

A noble try but no cigar this time I fear. (lol)

Georgina

Georgina Report 10 Mar 2011 16:25

Could she of lied when they got married??

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 10 Mar 2011 17:07

Georgina,

I think that perhaps we have confused you. The marriage to which I referred was the one in 1879 that Mel had posted. In the census records that Choccy posted, that Ellen Croft was born c1871 meaning that she could not have been the Ellen who married an Arthur Croft in 1879 as she would only have been about 8 years old at the time.

If I were you I would be tempted to purchase a copy of the death certificate of the William Charles Croft who died in Cheltenham in 1979. That seems to tick some of the boxes regarding what you know about your Great Grandfather such as his approximate birth year and the fact that his wife died in the same district.

I would not worry too much about there not being a second forename shown when he married or the fact that the information he gave about his father cannot at this stage be proved. Many people are known to have "Invented" a father to avoid embarrassment if they were themselves illegitimate. Also it is quite common for people to give only the name that they were generally known by rather than the full name with which they had been registered or baptised.

Please answer two questions relating to the marriage cert

What was the house number in St Pauls Street?

Who were the witnesses?
