Sue Gardner
I am trying to find any Cossins relatives in the Chedworth/Northleach area of Gloucestershire.
My great aunt Kate Cossins married a Price, lived to be 99 years old and I met her in about 1964 when she was 94. Her sister Elizabeth was my grandmother and married Harry Cecil Webley in Cheltenham in 1906.
Their father was William Burn Cossins who married Elizabeth Lane.
William Burn Cossins father was Josiah Cossins and his mother was Sarah Burn, both from Ilminster, Somerset. Josiah's father was Joseph.
Josiah and Sarah moved to the Compton Abdale/Withington/Chedworth area and both William Cossins and his wife Elizabeth Lane were born there
Are there any Glos/Somerset Cossins descendents who could be related, or who know more about the history of the Cossins family in Somerset?

Sue I am researching the Cossins family from Somerset and have 4 major trees all eminating from Somerset.
We come from differnt trees ( I have not yet found a link to my tree to yours altough I belive there is one)
As you may know Joseph Cossins ( born Cricket Malherbie 8 Oct 1786) was an Innkeeper running the White Horse Inn in Ilminster and appears to have had a brother Robert who ran inns in South Petherton and and Hinton St George
As far I have been able to work out Jopseph father was a Jerimiah Cossins born about 1747 that married a Batty Garnsey in Cricket Malherbie on the 25 September 1772.
As far as Cossins in Somerset go it seems that the family name is very old, there is a will of a Roger Cossins of Crewkerne dated 1542! Crewkerne seems to have been the centre for at least one major group ( the one that I am decendend from) although there are other groups that you can trce.
I have a tree for a group based in and around Whitcombe and Somerton that go back to about about 1700, they were farmers/landowners and lead down to some living Coisins's in Dorset.
I have another group based decended from a Samuel Cossins of about 1778 in Hinton St George also originally farmers noww leading to a major group of living cossins's in Wales
My own tree goes back to a John Cossins born in 1732 in Crewkerne and decendants form this tree are all over the SE of England notablely in Kent, the IOW and greater London.
There is one other major Group of Cossins's who's roots go bak to about 1737 that came from Exeter who may also be part of an original root. This decendants of this group are now all over the SE of England.
It would seem that the Cossins name has it roots in Somerset and that it is likley that most of the current groups share a common ancestry athough this requires a massive amount of research to prove.
There are a number of very old wills that can be found at the National Archives in Kew re;lating to Cossins's athough the futher back you go the more variable the spelling of the name becomes.
I have traced a number of members of the Cossins name back to before 1600 through to 1750 so the name is very old indeed .
Do you have a family tree that you could share? It would be good if we could compare notes.
By the way do you know that decendants of Kate Cossins and George Pope Price have adopted a double barrel of surnames and that today you can find entries for Cossins-Price ? some of these are as recent as 1983.
Antway hope this gives you an insight into the Cossins name
Regrads Barry Cossins

John, Welcome to the boards. As you have added to a very old post you would probably do better to start your own, stating how you found William and what you are hoping to find. You could also try sending pm's to the 3 previous people who have posted (by clicking on their names) because none of them may be actively reading these boards and so may not see your message. With luck, they may still have the same email and so will receive your message.
Added: As regards the second post and the use of double-barrelled surnames, perhaps it is best not to: http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/5062480.Bournemouth_fraudster_took___43_000_from_friend_s_business_and_customers/
