Trying to find Cornforth

John Cornforth married Esther Jane Hopps in 1904 in the parish Church at Stillington, Co Durham. He is listed as 27 years old. His father's name is recorded as William Cornforth. I cannot find him in the 1901 census, but in the 1891 census there is a family listed from the Northallerton District but John is only 9 years old. That would make him 22 when he married, not 27.

John Cornforth was my grandfather but I never knew him. My tree is stuck at this early stage and I don't know where to look now. The 1911 census would provide answers but that is 5 years away.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ray,

I shouldn't worry too much about the age difference.

a) the age on a census can be out by as much as 2 years ........ the census shows the actual age as given by a person, then it is translated into year of birth. It all depends on when in the year a census was taken vs. when a person's birthday was!

b) it is not unknown for a bride or groom to add or substract a few years when they get married!

Do you have any more evidence that his father was called William? Or is it just off the marriage certificate?

Heidi:

Yes, Raymond Cornforth was my father.

Sylvia:

The only evidence is on the marriage cert. As I cannot find him on ANY census I am unable to establish place of birth, except family lore that he was from Northallerton (or district)
