Hi, I was wondering if any kind soul might be able to help me with a census (1901/1911most likely the latter) lookup for my great grandmother, Ada (Bulmer??? not 100% sure if this is her middle name) Clemmit, born 1899 or 1900 in or around York. She was to marry a John Arthur Greaves in York in 1922. She is likely to have been living in York prior to this. Thank you for any help anyone can give to jump start this line of enquiry, much appreciated!!!! |

Thank you very helpful replies, funny how she can be a nurse, presumably to the child, when she was only 11! |

I think you are going to have to buy Ada's birth certificate as this will confirm her parents names enabling you to go further back. |

Yes think I might have to, although the information Helen supplied about her being an adopted child is particularly interesting, I imagine she'd still have a birth certificate despite that. I can remember seeing a series of letters at her house all signed from her sister Isabella. Wondering if there is perhaps a reference to an Isabella Clemmit anywhere? |

Hi sorry would it also be possible anyone to see if there's anything available for a Robert (Ellis) Clemmit in the 1911 census and for him and a Susannah Clemmit in 1891 both in York. From some research I've been doing I think it might be possible that they are the parents of Ada |

Marie, thanks for that, sorry I forgot to put the dates in, both were either 1865 or 1866 or thereabouts so those are the two I'm looking for. I'm glad to find some mention of Isabella, that would tie in nicely with the letters to Ada that we have somewhere at home. Susuannah is supposed to have died only a few months after Ada was born so that might explain why she was sent to live with others. Interesting how he works on the railway in 1911 and so did Joseph Streeton. Thanks Marie that is really useful!! |
