My name is Margrit Cleall and I am researching my husband's ancestor George Daniel Cleall. George migrated to Australia in the 1850's (?) and married a Frances Roberts on the 10 Jun 1874. On his Marriage Certificate it states that he was 29 years old making his DOB abt. 1845. It also states that his father's name was also George. I am searching for my George Danilel Cleall's DOB, Migration records, and parents. Do you feel that you may be able to help me? I would love to hear from you. P.S. (THE ONLY GEORGE CLEALL THAT I COULD FIND ON THE UK CENSUS & BMD, WITH A FATHER ALSO GEORGE, HAD A MOTHER CALLED MARTHA) AND MAIDEN NAME CAME UP AS BURT.) AND the only GEORGE CLEALL that I could find in the Australian Immigration records, shows a MARY CLEAL (36) with son GEO CLEAL, who arrived in Victoria in MAR 1857 aboard the CYCLONE. CAN YOU HELP ME with any information on George Cleall? Thank you,

Therre are these Public Family trees on www.ancestry.co.uk, that may give you some clues.
You should of course double check information!!

I've had this PM and thought it better placed on here as you might get some more help if people can see more details;
From Margrit Hi Ginny, Thank you so much for the information you have sent me about George Cleall on the UK Census.
My George Daniel Cleall was married in 1874 and his age was stated as 29, making is DOB abt 1845. His Death Certificate (1884) states his age as 43, making his DOB abt 1841. However, I tend to go with the Marriage Cert date (1845) as he was present, whereas the info on his Death Cert was entered by someone else and could have been a guess ??? What do you think.
ALso the only George Cleall I could find on the UK Census with a father also called George was the 1851 Census with a mother MARTHA BURT (father George already deceased). This George (with mother MARTHA) was not on the 1841 Census, as his DOB is registered as 1846.
The only GEO CLEAL (13) with mother MARY CLEAL (36) that I could find arrived on the CYCLONE in MAR 1857 in Victoria. However, as yet, I have not been able to connect my George Daniel Cleall with this GEO and MARY/
Any suggestions?

Is there any way that I can find out more in the UK about GEO(13) and MARY (36) CLEAL who migrated on the CYCLONE and arrived in Victoria in MAR 1857 ??? Birthplace (or could be departure port) - PLYMOUTH. Mary was a NURSE, according to her death certificate. And GEO was 13 in 1857, making is DOB abt 1844, which is close to my GEORGE DANIEL CLEALL's stated DOB of 1845??? I feel that this GEO is my GEORGE DANIEL but I need to positively link them? Any suggestions?
Thanks

Hello Magrit,
Following my pm of 18th I have been having a look around my Cleals and a few possibilities come to mind.
Mary and son George are on the Unassisted Inward Passenger Lists to Victoria 1852 - 1923 showing their names, ages arrival March 1857 on CYCLONE with Fiche No. 122 Page 004.
Are you able to order the record showing these Fiche and Page Nos from the Public Record Office Victoria? Or get someone to look at them for you? There should be some more information on there - hopefully the name of the county or even birthplace in England.
Mary would have paid their passage (or someone did) this should be shown, also if she was a widow.
George's birth: The entry for George Cleal b. 1844 South Perrott, Dorset to parents George Cleal and Martha Burt who were married 3 January 1843 South Perrott, Dorset - have you been able to investigate this any further?
George, the father died in 1848. I cannot see any other children following a quick look through. This George's parents were Reuben Cleal and Elizabeth Warren.
Is it possible that Martha changed her name to Mary?
I couldn't find a connection to Plymouth except to say that my own relatives from Somerset and Dorset left Plymouth for NSW in 1840's and 1850's, too.
Do you know of the other Cleal line in South Australia?

Hi Reece, Thank you for your research. I do have a copy of the CYCLONE Schedule Passenger List showing GEO (13) son, & Mary Cleal (36). Port of embarkation is LIVERPOOL. On Mary's Death Certificate it states that her place of birth was PLYMOUTH, and that she was a widow. No more info there. I have investigated the George & Martha Burt whose son, George Cleal was born 1844. The Dorset Register office advised me that I needed to find out my George's immigration details to enable them to match up their George with my George. I will start again from scratch in the new year and see what comes up. I appreciate your help. Thanks again. Kind regards Margrit Cleall

Hello Magrit,
As you already have some information you don't need to start again. I'm sure there are lots of kind people on GR who can help you.
On the record I have from the PRO Victoria the Port is shown as B which I understand means British - you say that the passenger list shows "liverpool" as the port of embarkation. If George and Mary are from Dorset/Somerset or Devon then it does seem a very long way to travel to start their journey in Liverpool.
I have looked for the CYCLONE you mention but found the following:
Cyclone schooner 89 tons Master Young
Melbourne to Newcastle on 25 Feb 1857
"Cyclone" of Aberdeen 665 tons
arrived 5 May 1857 NSW from London to Sydney
Master Jos. Hossack
I can't tie one to the March date shown on the index to Unassisted Passengers to Vic 1852-1923.
Sylvia (in Canada) posted 3 trees from Ancestry - have you been able to contact the owners of these or have a look at them?
George married from the "Home of George Cleall" who is this George? Could he be an Uncle or a cousin?
How did you find out that his name was George Daniel?
I will continue to look through my Cleal ancestors (there are a lot of them!) and be in touch.
Best wishes for 2010.

Hi Reece, Thank you so much for your reply. YOU are very kind and I appreciate your interest and help.
The info I have for the CYCLONE includes:- Ship's name - CYCLONE; Master's Name:- GEORGE KERR; Date at LIVERPOOL - 28th December, 1856 - muster Port of Embarkation - LIVERPOOL Port at which passengers have contracted to land - MELBOURNE
So if Liverpool is a long way to travel to start their journey, perhaps I should be looking elsewhere for their place of birth? And not Dorset?
Regarding the 3 Ancestry Trees - CLEALL, cjohn1, bjohns - we are all related and have all become stuck with George Daniel Cleall. We are all in communication with each other but cannot solve the puzzle of George's parentage or DOB. Still trying though!
I have a copy of George Daniel Cleall's Marriage certificate to Frances Roberts - 10 Jun 1874 - His marriage cert states that his name was George DANIEL Cleall and his Age was stated as 29; Bachelor; Trade - Tradesman; Residence - Salisbury, District of Adelaide; Name and Surname of FATHER - George Cleall; Place in which celebrated - House of George Cleall, Salisbury. (this is ambiguous, as it could be George Daniel's House, OR his father, George Cleall's House????)
So we are no closer to the origins of Geoge Daniel, but I am still investigating.
Thank you again for your help. It is much appreciated?
Kind regards and HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and your family.

Hello Magrit,
Thanks for your kind response.
Yes, I received the CYCLONE details today, as you posted. Now I am trying to find out if the ship also called at PLYMOUTH, Devon before sailing to Melbourne.
If you are able to look at Mary and George's record on the fiche 122 Page 004 of the PROV Unassisted Passenger Lists to Vic 1852-1923 then you may find something extra. Or have your other connections (the 3 on Ancestry) already looked at this? Mary's place of birth would be such a big help. The Cleals, at that time were mostly in Dorset, Somerset and some in Devon.
John Cleel (b. c1514) and lived in South Perrott, West Dorset in the 16th century had a family of six children. Family historian June Clist (nee Cleal) says "there is little doubt that all Clealls are descended from him"
The other thing I've noticed while looking through the names is that there are very few named George.
So let's see if we can find Mary and George Daniel Cleal.
Keep in touch.
Regards,
Reece

Hi Reece,
I am so excited to have made this contact with you. You are so wonderful to help me with my search! I have been going round in circles for the past year trying to locate my George's birth details.
I actually have a hard copy of what is on the Fiche - but unfortunately it doesn't give me anything extra. However, on Mary Cleal's Death certificate which I also have a copy, it tells me that her birthplace was Plymouth.
Below is some info from a South Australian Genealogist who looked at the Fiche for me:- "I checked the VIC passenger lists on fiche to find - *** fiche 122 ship CYCLONE page 4 listed as English passengers from Liverpool 20 Dec 1856 bound for Melbourne 2014 Mary Cleal 36yrs ditto for wife (for the name on the line above) George Cleal 13yrs son no listing of husband with Mary; This appears to answer your question about their relationship - mother and son"
ALSO "Dear Margrit Have you checked the 1841 and 1851 Census records of Devon as Mary was born in Plymouth ? Are there records in a parish chest or County Record Office in Plymouth ? SAGHS does not have records which record DOB and parents names unless a family tree has been done Your answers would be in England regards Beryl Schahinger Research Coordinator"
ALSO "Mary Cleall 76y widow died 22 August 1893 in Adelaide Hospital and was buried by the Government in West Terrace Cem. Adelaide Hospital admission register records entry 1381 Mary Cleall 76yrs widow a nurse admitted 25 July 1893 arrived in the colony 40yrs ago aboard CYCLONE birthplace Plymouth rel: C/E last address in colony Ann Street died 22 August 1893 of cancer of uterus"
Of the 3 of us on Ancestry who are researching George Daniel Cleall, my husband is the most direct descendant, and I have done the most research on George, i.e. marriage and death certificates, as well as the info on Mary & GEO Cleall on the CYCLONE and MARY's Death Certificate.
So you have it all..... I feel that this Mary and GEO may be my George Daniel Cleall. Also let's not forget that George mentioned that his father was also called George Cleall.......
Thank you Reece for your help. I look forward to hearing from you. You have been most kind to follow up for me! I am very grateful for your interest.
P.S. I have read the information on the CLEALL family history and have been in touch with Roger Cleal who sent me the history info.
Kind regards Margrit

I wonder if you have been able to look at the Death Certs for both Mary and her son, George. Does it state how long they lived in each State? It was suggested that they might have travelled overland but the method of travel then was usually by sea.
Another place to look is trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper for information.
Have you looked at DEVON and also GUERNSEY for Cleal reco rds?
Hope this helps.
