Have you located his death? Might at least narrow it down a bit. From what you say I am assuming there is no date of any kind on that pension record.

brummiejan Report 4 Mar 2011 18:15

Yes, it certainly could. To sort out any more details I suspect you might have to look at newspapers as there doesn't seem to be anything else left.

Ronald Report 4 Mar 2011 21:48

Hi Janette,
I have a copy of a booklet called 'Bygone Breweries of Sheffield'. It lists the following breweries in the Bamforth Street / High House area:

Samuel Berry - Crown Brewery - Langsett Road

J L Cockayne & Sons - Owlerton Brewery - Capel Street / Penistone Road

H W Dearden - High House Brewery - 547 Penistone Road - this brewery stool on the land between Bamforth Street and Burton Street just below the Mission. I think the building is still there and you can still see the (now shortened) brewery chimney stack.

James Haynes & Co - Crown Brewery - Langsett Road - this building was still there until recently. Just before you got to Kelvin on the way into Sheffield.

Given where they lived, i would guess that he worked for either High House or Owlerton but I'm not sure.

Rgds,
Ron.

Hi Ron thankyou for your message,my great grand father Lewis lived at 82 bamforth street for a while and that was opposite the Mission.he also lived at high house as well, so you might be right he might have worked for one of them,do you know how i go about finding information of names that worked at these breweries thanks Janette
