Well, after about 25 years of searching and being unsure, I have at last obtained a death certificate for my Grandfather, George Clarke. He died on 2nd November 1930 at the age of 84 in Tooting Bec Hospital, of Senile Decay. The death was registered by his step-daughter, (my Grandmother's daughter from her first marriage), who was Caroline Churcher, but had married by that time and was C E Chant.

Thank you so much to all of you who made suggestions or sent information. The members of this forum have been so generous in my searches. I am sincerely grateful.

Thank you all so much for the extra information. I know my grandfather was a good age when he died, but I'm not sure whether he would have been as old as 92. I guess it's time to buy some more certificates, though I am still waiting for the last lot from several weeks ago!

It's no wonder we get muddled from time to time; the 1891 census extract above shows the girls born in Southend whereas I have information that shows Caroline born in Peckham, and Jessie born in
East Dulwich. I guess that again I should buy the certificates for the most accurate information.

Thank you especially for the 1911 census information. That must be George and Leonard, my Dad would be 18 at that time, so already fled the nest I guess. I need to check theRoyal Garrison Artillery, as I think he was in the army by that time.

You are all so kind, and I haven't yet found a way to repay your kindness, or to help others. No doubt that will happen in time.

Best wishes to everyone

Re the address of 16 The Grove.

I have looked through 1911 census and it would appear that this was in Camberwell

Some people living there have written their address as 'The Grove' Camberwell, but the majority have called it 'Camberwell Grove' which I believe would be correct..

No 16 at that time was a 'lock-up' shop with no one living in it.

Thank you for your replies. Yes Tracey, that's him. I haven't been able to find him on the 1911 census, but I must admit I didn't try anywhere out of London. Ihave found one that looks right, but it is in Wandsworth. I must check my London geography...........
Anyway, thanks for the tips. I'm grateful for the help I get from members.

He could have been staying with relatives when he died - 2 of my grandparents died out of normal residence.

Hello everyone,

My Grandfather, George Clarke, born Epping, Essex 1846, lived in and around Camberwell, London for most of his married life. I know that he lived to a fair age, but don't know exactly when he died or where he was buried. I have only one photograph of him, which shows him as an elderly man (using a walking stick), and with a 'Kitchener' type mustache. Of course, he may have had that style for a long time - my DH has had the same style beard and mustache for 47 years! I have found a death record in 1930, which would make him 84 (as per the record) but it is in Wandsworth. When the photograph was taken he was living at 16 The Grove. Does anyone know if this is/was in Camberwell please?

I have had a great deal of help from members, and have had some really good information and contacts. I do try to stay near the computer after posting, but my DH has Alzheimer's Disease, and so sometimes it is not possible. However, I do try to remember to thank people who have helped me - just maybe not straight away!

Best wishes
Pauline
