I read her name as Afrey on the 1901 census.
This looks like marriage but rather late for birth of Lily.

You're kidding, Kelly?
You're insisting his name is Charls and not Charles?
And she's Alvey not Afrey.
She's definitely Afrey and he's Charles on the 1901 census if you look at the original.
You're basing your information on a mistranscription.

Kelly

Kelly Report 28 Aug 2009 18:55

sorry no i am not kidding

i looked on Ancestry under my spelling and its comes up 1st
its 1901 census, and yes my cousin was his gt gr daughter, so i know the spelling is right
in later years they may have mise spelt it but it is there

Look at the original not the mistranscription!

Hi Kelly...the only thing you are doing wrong is believing what a transcriber ( a person who copied the records by hand) has incorrectly recorded...so it WILL come up on Ancestry incorrectly spelt...does that make sense to you ? Ancestry even have a facility for any members to note an alternative if they know something to be obviously wrong...Believe me I have found more than a few! So what the other members are saying is - Don't trust completely everything you may find recorded ..double check.
(I do believe you will find it is Charles as the other members have said)
Hope this helps and good luck Pat.

bit like hens teeth remember
but thank you for your kind help, but it is nice to be told how to do these things, for people who already know i must seem really thick, sorry

Kelly, you're not thick and don't put yourself down. It's a common mistake. It's just that with genealogy you have to learn not to discount something because it's not spelled the same. Remember back then most people couldn't read or write and they didn't know if their name was mis-spelled.

Just noticed your previous message. You cetainly didn't upset me, Kelly.
Good luck with your research!
