Trying to find Chapman

I am trying to find out more information on my husbands father's real family. Only details I have are a birth certificate and adoption certificate. Mother is listed on birth certificate as Alice Maud Chapman Bookkeeper (Dyers & Clearner of Croydon) UD and lived at 128 Waddon New Road Croydon. She gave birth to Thomas Howard on 10 February 1912 at Queen Chartlottes Hospital. Thomas Howard was adopted from St. Elizabeth's Home 40 Bessborough Street SW by Jessie Hadley of 9 Ponsonby?Terrace Westminster. Only strange thing is that on birth certificate Maud is spelt without an e and the signature on the adoption certificate shows Maude with an e. My husband's father then took the surname of Hadley. We have no idea who Thomas' father was but every year up to the age of 18 he received a cheque from his real father but unfortunately none of these cheques have survived. If anyone has any details it would be brilliant.
