My great grandfather Alfred Chapman was born around 1866. In at least two census returns he said he was born in Hoxton but there are no Alfred Chapman's that match this. He went to Joye's School in Blackfriars, leaving in 1880. He worked in the printing trade describing himslef variously as a printer warehouseman, printer and stereotyper. He married Charlotte Potter in October 1886. They lived sometimes in Southwark and sometimes in Shoreditch/Bethnal Green. They had twelve children. He said his father was also called Alfred and that he was a vocalist. Unfortunately I just cannot identify Alfred Chapman's birth certificate. If anyone has any suggestion I will be gratfeul to hear them. |
