William Chapman changed his family name to De Burgh. Does anyone know WHY.

Could the name De Burgh have been his mothers maiden name.

William Chapman was born in 1840 and baptised at St Marys, Bishophill Jnr. in York. He changed his name to De Burgh and took the title of Count, between the age of 40 and 50. He died 8 March 1901 aged 60. He was living at Brinkworth Hall, Elvington in Yorkshire at the time. All his adult children adopted this new name despite being baptised Chapman.

I think he may have just bought the title to look good as the family fortunes improved. I have delved as far as I can into the family past but can find no other connection with the name De Burgh. A De Burgh came over with William the Conqueror and was given Knaresborough castle - the line is well researched from very early days but there is no mention of Chapman in the line.

Thank you for your interest.
