Independant means?

Hello, can anybody please tell me what living by independant means is? I have found both my GGG Nana's on 1841 census, both with this written against their names. No husbands, only children. This is the first time I have come across it and I am very curious?
Marie.

The husbands may well be working away from home and sending money back.

If they are older they could be living off of some sort of pension fund.

Or living from the proceeds of bonds, stocks etc. I have a will of one of my ancestors which states that his estate be converted into "such & such a stock" for the benefit of his wife - presume she would have the income to live on.
