My gggrandfather William Pearson b 1838 st Lukes married a Maria Castleman in 1859-she was from Islington. They lived in Hoxton old Town till 1870/1 before moving to Brixton.. I have date of birth for first son William as 27/11/1862 but certificate shows 20/11/1862. To be 100% sure this is the correct Maria I need details of their other children to check mothers maiden name. I have approx dates of them but not exact enough to get birth certs. Any help/ideas please.

Although Maria Castleman was born Islington in 1837, she was baptised in Lambeth February 1841. At the same time as her sister, Mary Ann, who was born 1841 in Lambeth.

The nieces living with them on the 1861 census are the children of Mary Ann. She married a John Jones. By 1871 John Jones has died, and Mary Ann has moved in with Henry Hitchen, with her 2 daughters.


The date of birth shown on a baptism record is only the date which is given by one of the parents at the time. I'm not saying it was the father who answered this question but .........

Thanks . 1861. Annie 8 months fits with my info. As Mary Ann was a Castleman, Maria Castleman must be the correct Maria. What threw me was birth cert 20/11/62 with address 17 Lucan Place and baptism birth date 27/11/62 with address 17 Newton Place.(as at 1/3/ 1863-date of baptism).
I've another Maria in my tree for more than 5 years!!
1881 Mona is an error.

From above I have found out that William and Maria were married at Chingford 1859 and were living at Sydenham in 1861. Their daughter Annie was 8 months. In 1871 it shows Annie age 10 born in Sydenham , Surrey. (the rest of the family were born in Shoreditch , which is correct).
Yet from another souce I have Annie baptised 2/9/1860 at Chingford.
She was 20 when she married 17/5/1880 -so she must have been born before 17/5/1860. Please does anyone know the date of the 1861 Census to prove if Annie was 10 or would she have been 11.

The 1861 Census for England was taken on the night of 7 April 1861. All responses were to reflect the individual's status as of 7 April 1861 for all individuals who had spent the night in the house.

Thanks. Sydenham was a sub-district of Lewishem..If she was 8 months at 1861 census she must have been born Sept 1860, but when married May 1880 she was shown as 20 ( when she would have been 19)..Its strange as all else seems to fit.

Are you quite certain that Annie married in 1880. Only her siblings William, Arthur, Walter and Louisa all married in Clapham.

There is an Annie Maria Pearson marrying in Clapham in December 1881 to Richard Joseph Wenham. This Annie gives her age as 21, which would be correct for your Annie.
