Another new name! Possibly anyway -
1851 census, I have found Jerry Caholane, married to Mary born c:1818, both of Ireland and baby Michael 3 months old. Address is Wheatsheaf Lane which I understand is in Fulham/Hammersmith region - or was at that time.

Any thought on this please...

Pam Report 9 Aug 2010 03:52

Thanks for that bit of advice and I have now got out the census copies that I have, to have a good look.

1861 - Jeremiah Carroll and family of William St, Fulham Fields

1871 - Jeremiah Callahan and same family, ages and names correct as are the occupations, and still at William St.

1877 - April 29th, marriage certificate of Michael Callan and Ellen Goller - Groom's father Jeremiah Callan, Gardener: and Bride's father, Daniel Goller.
Both families listed as Brtitania Court. The marriage was at St Pauls Church in the Parish of Hammersmith.

Surely it's the same family?? What do you think?

Pam...Its going to take some sorting to verify if they are the same family despite you having Certs ..unfortunately Callaghan/Callan/Carroll and various other permutations of the surname were "individual families" and also same families with the surname mistranscribed...
Have you been able to look at the "Original Census images" to see how they compare with the transcribed..?

Can some one please help me sort this out?
What I have so far is this -

1. I have established that Michael CALLAN m: Ellen Goller at St Paul's Church Hammersmith on April 29th 1877. I have the marriage Certificate. They were my Great Grandparents.

2. I know that Michael's father -stated on marriage certificate was Jeremiah CALLAN, Gardener

3. I know Ellen's father, again from the certificate, was Daniel GOLLER, both families are listed as Britannia Court, Fulham??

4. Bridget Goller (Ellen's sister) married George McCoy 30 June 1868

5. I have Jeremiah and his family (wife Mary, from Ireland) listed in the 1861 census going by the name of CARROLL from Ireland - dad is still a gardener's labourer but the address is now living in William st. I have checked and that's in Chelsea

6. I have the same family still in William st in the 1871 census but now the name is CALLAHAN from Ireland -dad is still a gardener's labourer and all other members of the family remain the same.

I have found the records of all of Michael and Ellen's children going by the surname of CLARN

Thanks for all that useful info, especially the nudge bit, I never knew that.
I have looked through BMD and Family Search and nothing much comes up, but the most useful so far has been census records - that's how we discovered the 4 name changes in 3 generations.
Any ideas for further efforts? It's more difficult when I don't have access to the National Archives in London where just everything is available!!

Thanks again. P

To nudge a thread simply type an 'n' into the reply box.

This is used to bring a thread back to the top of the boards for more assistance or to remind someone that they have not responded to the help given. Every time something is added, the people who have helped you will see it in their own My Threads box.

If you don't know about them, there are a couple of sites we would recommend that you look at yourself as it's fun to do your own research...

freebmd.org
familysearch.org
also, google on-line parish clerks as many counties have very helpful records on line.

All of the above sites are free to search.

Enjoy. Cx

Thanks for that, I will try that method. In a help topic it was suggested to give the thread a "nudge" from time to time, so how do I do that? Any help is appreciated. Thank you

Cynthia Report 23 Jul 2010 18:40

I would suggest the thread which has the most information on it. Perhaps you could add the information from the other threads to it and then delete them. Cx.

No I wasn't aware but thank you. Some of us are quite ignorant but value the advice of other, more experienced researchers. So how do I proceed with future queries about this family? Which nthread do I include?

Are you not aware that ONE thread per topic is the GR rule?

My thanks indeed, sorry it was an oversight of my inexperienced part. We assume his birth was around 1815-20 and his wife Mary in the 1818-22 range. I know they were in London in 1861 and 1871 census and at the wedding of Jeremiah's son Michael, (surname now changed to Callan), to Ellen Goller in 1877.
In 1878 when they started having children the name became Clarn and all were known by that name.

Please somebody advise me which name to research as the family appears to have had 4 name changes over just 3 generations!

Carroll then Callahan, then Callan and finally Clarn.

All this and I'm doing from Australia so it's very long distance. Thanks
