My Maternal Grandfathers Ancestry (HELP?)

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Scott Report 22 Nov 2008 16:01

At the moment we are trying to find my maternal grandfathers ancestry which is proving complex!
My grandfathers father was William Burton born 25th December 1896, pretty certain he was born in Brighton. His mother (my grandfathers grandmother) was Hannah Burton (maiden name Gillam) born in Brighton.
William married Edith Rose Russell on July 3rd 1926 in Brighton. Edith was born January 18th 1900.
We are pretty certain that we have located Ediths family. For the family we think is right on the 1901 Census the following details are listed:
Florence Russell Wife aged 33, married
Amos Russell Son aged 8
Edith Russell Daughter 1
Florence Russell Daughter 6
Arthur Russell Son 2
Frederick Russell Son 5

No head of house is listed as living there.

Any more information on any part of the family would be sooo helpful I cannot describe! Also if anybody could find out what happened to the children listed as living with Florence. My grandfather does recall an aunt Florence and uncle Arthur but not the others so would be interesting to find out what happened. Also we dont know why there is no head of house, can anybody look in the 1881 census and possibly see if there is anything there?
Like I said any information on the Russells, William Burton or Hannah Gillam would be phenomenal!
Thank you

Helen

Seaham Lass, where did the name 'Burton' come into it. Because my grandfather's name is William Burton, so was Barton written by mistake or is Burton incorrect and the family should be called Barton?

Thank you all so much its been outstanding , I commend you all. Any more information will be taken with the highest gratitude!

I think that the enumerator wrote Barton instead of Burton.
William (sr) Hannah and William (jr) all seem to fit in with what you already know but the Burton brothers ie William and David are elusive in 1891 but I'll keep looking.....they must belong to somebody !!!

Scott Report 22 Nov 2008 17:09

What do you mean they are elusive in 1891?

Does it mean there is something suspicious going on lol ?

In 1891 William Burton born 1876 becomes for some unknown reason William Weller - the rest of his family are also under the name Weller

It's the same family as 1881
William Burton 25. Plasterer
Jane Burton 25
William Burton 5
Rose Burton 3
Ellen Burton 10 months
All born Brighton

1891
William Weller 35, Plasterer
Jane 33
**William 15
Rose 13
Nellie 10 (Ellen)
David H 8
George 5
Alfred T 3
Thomas 10 months

In 1901 they are once again called Burton !
William Burton married Jane Colburn in 1876 in Brighton

Hey guys, another quick question if any body doesnt mind lol!
Going back to the start of the thread Florence Russell's (nee Collings) husband (who we think was Amos Russell if we go back ten years) was not present with them in 1901. They are not divorced as she is still listed as Russell and I have checked the death records and he was not registered dead. Where does this mean Amos was, is prison an option? If so how could I obtain prison records etc?
