Is Sam a Minton? Cottrell?

You probably posted on the "surname board" for his surname. Unfortunately, all of us seeing your post on the general board can't track it back. Stupid and unnecessarily useless system, it's what we pay for.

The only Edith Burton marriage to a Sam* I see in 1910 is in Wakefield, and possibly to a Sam Mountain.

Ah. GB found her - but of course there's a glitch and she seems to have been mistranscribed. Nope, it was him; they'd be the only two on the page.

Pat, what is it you're looking for - descendants? ancestors?

Have you searched for children of Sam and Edith at FreeBMD?

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

There are a dozen Minton-Burton births after 1911. A number of them are in Droitwich.

Hi Pat. The second appalling bit of user-unfriendliness, who cares about the paying customer-itis at this place is:

To reply in your thread you have to click on the purple Reply button at the top. Clicking on my name sends a message to my inbox. Does nobody any good there, and makes me toggle back and forth to the thread.

Sorry wrong board didn't realise.
Sam Minton was my husbands grandad so we know his children.
We did track him down to Kidsgrove in Staffs but someone I contacted told me that Kidsgrove Sam married a Louise in her husbands family so we had to start searching again.
On marriage certificate Sam's father's name was John.
We think he was born approx 1889 but we are not really too sure.

Does the marriage certificate state Sam's age, and that's how you get approx 1889?

Have you looked for a birth at FreeBMD?

1885-1893, there's only one Samuel Minton birth, and it looks like it would be him. (It shows twice; the one in italics is a mistranscription that has been corrected.)

If it's his ancestry you're looking for, that certificate will give you both parents' names, etc. Not quite sure what you're after still.

Not having any luck finding Samuel or John in the 1891 or 1901 census. Hm. Even just searching at Ancestry by given names.

Best to get the birth certificate and see what it offers. One possibility is that his mother was the Minton, and John was fictitious. If that were the case and the mother subsequently married, Sam could be hiding under a stepfather's surname, for instance.

If you do, just come back (click "My threads" over on the left to find your thread anytime) and post what it says!

For info, this is the only Minton household in Elmley Lovett in 1891 (which would be just about the time the Samuel birth was registered).

Munice Minton 43 (it looks like Munice, but might more likely be Maurice)
Sarah Minton 40
William Minton 15
Thomas Minton 10
Frances Minton 7
Ellen Minton 5
Erick Minton 2

This is that household in 1881, in Clun, Shropshire:

Maurice Minton 28
Sarah Minton 27
Alfred Edward Minton 13
Alice Jane Minton 9
William Minton 6
Thomas Minton 4
Arthur John Minton 2

Daughter Alice would have been of an age to have a child in 1891.

Except ... Alice died.

Deaths Mar 1891
Minton Alice Jane 20 Martley 6c 169

It's conceivable she died of complications of pregnancy/childbirth, and her son wasn't registered until the next quarter ...

Here he is in 1901.

Estimated Birth Year: abt 1891

Do come back with it, Pat!

It's always more interesting to know about a person, and why they are being hunted up, than just to see the dry dates and places. ;)

Right back again and hope I can put things down so they make sense to all.

The story told by grandad (Sam Minton) was that he ran away from home with his brother when he was quite young (we dont know the brothers name) and we dont know where they came from either.
He has always worked on farms and was a cattle drover at some time before he was married to Edith.

Sam lived in Ombersley, Worcestershire and when he died in 1981 he was into his 90s.

We have been told too that his mother was married to Mr Cadwallader (if this is true we have not yet made the connection) we know that Cadwalladers also where in Ombersley or around that area.

So this is the one that looks like him:

Births Jun 1891
Minton Samuel Droitwich 6c 371

If it is, and that's him in the 1901, I wonder whether slightly older brother Erick is the brother in question?

Births Dec 1888
MINTON Erick Martley 6c 249

Deaths Sep 1909 ?
MINTON Eric 21 Stourbridge 6c 81

Well ...

That Samuel's mother (or grandmother?) was a Cadwallader!

This is the Minton household in Stoke upon Trent, Staffordshire, in 1871, lodgers:

Elizabeth Callaghan 50
Joseph Heath 57
Mary Heath 56
Mathis Minton 23
Sarah Minton 22
Alfred Edward Minton 2
John Fearnley 34
Robert Gallington 50

Wondering whether Sarah Cadwallader Minton was a Cadwallader by marriage, but that doesn't seem possible.

Patricia

Patricia Report 24 Aug 2009 23:48

Have found Minton / Cadwallader connection at last.

Thanks Janey for all you have sent to me.

Seen marriage of Maurice and Sarah 1869
Found death of Maurice in1901
Could not find a death for Sarah so wondered if she married again (as this could bethe story of the 2nd marriage)
Found a marriage of a Sarah Minton to Benjamin Poole (Dudley in 1924) then death of Sarah A Poole (West Brom 1925) aged 74

If Sarah was born in 1851 then in 1925 she would have been 74 when she died

Looks like she married aged 73 if its the right Sarah (my own grandad had a 2nd marriage when he was round about 80 so I know it could happen)

Anyway will still keep checking that out.
Bye for now
Pat

PS Cant remember what site I was on but think saw Richard was father of Sarah

Well, just keep coming back if you get those marriage certificates! That 1924 marriage would be quite a thing.

I don't see a Sarah Minton in the 1911 who looks like yours - a Sarah Elizabeth, a Sarah Grace, a Sarah Jane, and a Sarah Ann 1845 in Malton, Yorkshire. I suspect the 1924 marriage is a different one, but let us know!
