Mabel Burns born 23 July 1888 in Manchester was my grandmother. She appeared on the 1901 census as the adopted daughter of William and Eliza Basnett of Devonshire St, along with her brother Fred Burns. Mabel later went under the name of Mabel Burns Basnett. There is a possibility that they were both illegitimate children of maids working for Sir William Agnew in Manchester, and were taken in by Eliza, who also worked as a maid for Sir William. I do not know why the children were named Burns, but if anyone has any knowledge of members of their family having their baby adopted in Manchester in 1883 or 1888, I would really love to hear from them. Thanks, Sue |
