Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me. I have a William Brown C1908 married to Ellen Maud Ambage C1908 in 1933 at Liverpool Register Office. (I have all previous census records for Ellen's family). William's father is another William Brown, Occupation - Dairyman's Motor Driver. (confirmed by their marriage certificate) The father I believe married a Mary (surname unknown). He was born C1887. A family member seems to think that this William came from around the Wrexham area. The first William C1908 I mentioned was born in Liverpool. I have had a look on the 1911 census but no success. (too many William Brown's). Lancashire bmd/Northwalesbmd not much luck here either. Both William and Ellen Maud are buried at Smithdown Cemetery, Liverpool, death dates are unknown. I don't know Liverpool well enough to visit the Archives and was wondering if someone would be kind enough to look up their burial dates. Apparently, both had died before 1950. As for the whereabouts of the father (C1887) or his marriage to Mary prior to 1911 still leaves me puzzled as to which way to go from here. Any hints or tips would be ever so grateful
Many thanks

Do the names of the witnesses provide any clues ?

Witnesses to marriage were C.H.Brown and L Ambage, I think possible brother/sister to each side . At the time of his marriage William Brown (Occup. Flour Miller's Workhouseman) was living at 70 Pecksniff St, and Ellen Maud Ambage (Occup. Domestic Cook) were living at 62 Pecksniff St, Liverpool. Someone in the family a while back mentioned a Mary McCarthy. I have looked for a marriage entry for her and a William Brown, to no avail.

Hi, As far as I can gather William Brownhad the following siblings - Charles Brown, Dougie, Martha, John, Ruth, Emily and Mabel. Wwhether any of the siblings had middle names, I wouldn't know and I wouldn't like to guarantee all these names. Information was provided by my father-in-law, who doesn't have the best of memories, even though his heart is in the right place.

For Potty, This family seems to fit the criteria. Have looked on the 1906 Ordnance Survey Map of Toxteth and Steble St appears to be just round the corner from Pecksniff St so a possible candidate. You wouldn't happen to know the Ref No for the 1991 census entry by any chance, so I could obtain a copy.

sorry that should be 1911 census. A bit ahead of myself there.

Sorry Sharon, I cannot get the census ref without paying!

If you go to the site and enter William Brown, b1908 and put the address in the Residential Place box , it should just bring up the one record which you could see and download if you buy credits.

Make sure you put the address exactly like this (might be a good idea to cut and paste it)

1 STEBLE ST LPOOL S

Hi Potty, Have got a copy. Many thanks. How did you happen to come across this entry? I searched last night as well as spent a fair bit (in money) trying to find one that fitted. Your entry hadn't come up amongst the one's I had searched. I'm going to ask father-in-law again, see if he remembers his dad's brother Charles having a middle name. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that if I mention the name Henry, it might ring bells. Will let you know as soon as I find out. Many thanks again

Hi Potty, Father-in-law can't remember if Charles had a middle name. But there is a birth entry for 1910 on Lancashirebmd, so I'm going to take a chance and order the certificate. Am keeping fingers crossed as to it being the right one. Again, very many thanks for your help

Hi Sharon

I found the 1911 entry by putting in William Brown b1908 and in the other household members first names William and Mary, and Brown in other household members surname. The Toxteth one stood out.
