Find Ancestors

I am trying to find further information on Thomas Broadbent, he shows in a census as residing in Boston Spa, West Yorkshire. He died aged 52 in 1882 and is buried at St Marys Church Boston Spa WEst Yorkshire. I am trying to find if there is a connection between him and my father Kenneth Albert Broadbent 1921-1994

does this mean you already have a Broadbent posting? if so, you should continue to use that one

what else do you know about him? there are literally hundreds of Thomas Broadbent's on the census who fit the bill datewise

what information are you asking for that you think would help make this connection?

how would anyone else know what information might make the connection -- we don't know Kenneth's parents names, his grandparents' names ... between 1882 and 1921 is a four decade span, what might have happened in that time (or more likely before) to connect this man with your father?

I have limited knowledge of my father's ancestry, his father was Arthur Broadbent, his mother was Ethel Backhouse 1900-1946, his grandfather was Albert Broadbent 1867 who was born in Middlesborough he married Anne Wratten (1870) and lived in Boston Spa, West Yorkshire. His great grandfather was Benjamin Broadbent 1841 who shows as born in Morley. I grew up in Boston Spa and the only Broadben'ts in the village were my family and as far as I am aware that was always the case and still is now. My father had aunts and uncles in the village, Phyllis Broadbent born 1899, was one of them. Albert Broadbent shows in the census of 1901 as married (although I haven;t been able to locate a wedding certificate!).

Thomas Broadbent died 1882 and his wife Theresa Marie are both buried in the church yard at Boston Spa which is why I am trying to identify if there is a connection.

the way to find connections is normally to work backward establishing info as you go, rather than pick a person arbitrarily

Ah, you posted his wife's name while I was searching.

There is no Thomas Broadbent in a census with a wife Theresa (or Teresa).

Perhaps you know the date she died ... since I see no death for her in the GRO index at freebmd ...............


there is also no marriage for those names ............

Thomas Broadbent was born Lancashire 1830, it may be the other way around Maria Theresa...they both died in 1882, He was a gentleman and lived at 153 High Street, Boston Spa, West Yorkshire.

Thank you ChrissieX.. I don't know about the Tempest side, I know very little about the family as a whole. It just seemed that Martha Tempest at 62 seems a little old to have a son of 19...I will try and find out more on that.

Martha Tempest is the GRANDMOTHER of the two Broadbent boys, see the record for Benjamin, it says Grandson.

The place of birth previously said '??'

it was corrected by an Ancestry user about a year ago

that person has not logged in to Ancestry in over 6 months but possibly a message sent through the system would reach them



I am not seeing any connection at all between these Broadbents.

I'm glad some of this was new, and I hope you have figured out that Tempest connection.

Ordinarily I would assume that Martha Tempest is Benjamin's maternal grandmother, that is, her daughter was Benjamin's mother. It is always possible though that Martha had remarried to a Tempest.

To go back any farther on Benjamin, you need his marriage certificate that will give you his father's name, which hopefully would match with the father's name on this birth certificate

It is always best to start out asking what you really want to know, for instance if you are really looking to find out about Benjamin.

Asking about some other person you _think_ _might_ be related usually just leads to confusion!
