Do you have their marriage cert? if so does it have a father's name for either of them.

Kerry Report 7 Nov 2008 12:10

I found my second cousin on here, who has got the certificate but said it was as far as she was able to go back so I presume she hasn't got their names

If I were you I'd ask her for all the info off the cert or if she can send you a copy.

For all who are helping

I am Booboo's 2nd cousin.

James Bowers b. 1838 UK?
married 17 August 1869 Launceston Tasmania.
Agnes Scott b.1849 Scotland ?
On birth of first child 1870 James is a Carpenter.

I have a James Bowers in the 1851 Census HO107;Piece:2240;Folio:367;Page;32
in Lancashire Oldham as 13 & a Joiner.
He seems to disappear after this census in the UK.

If we could find a shipping or immigration record it would be helpful. I have looked for near on 2yrs but so far haven't been able to find anything.
He may have come to Australia via America or direct I don't know, this piece of the puzzle is missing.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers

Sorry I haven't looked at any shipping records yet, but if you think that the James Bowers in Oldham age 13, joiner, is your gg grandfather, I have details of his baptism, mother's maiden name, marriage of his father to Frances his stepmother.

Hi again,
I don't know if you have census information apart from the 1851. Apparently according to terms and conditions I can't copy and paste, so I may have to e-mail you.

1851, head of household Charles, wife Frances, living in Hollins, Oldham

1841, Hollins, Oldham. Charles, 26, joiner,
Ann 26
Mary 7
Frances 3
James 3
William Henry 10months

1861, can't find James and his father Charles, but Frances Bowers, married, 41, born Staffs
Ann Hawley, daughter, 20 born Staffs
Alice E Bowers 11
Jane Bowers 7

1871 Frances Bowers 51, widow
Jane Bowers 16

from lancashirebmd, surname Bowers, born in Oldham, mothers maiden name Wain:
1850 Alice Ellen
1852 William Henry (poss died 1854)
1854 Jane

March 1/4 1850
Charles Bowers married Frances Hawley nee Wain, Prestwich St Mary

After she was widowed, Frances Bowers/Wain married John Johnson 1875, Oldham.

From the 1841 census, William Henry, 10 months, I searched lancashirebmd -

1840 William Henry Bowers, mmn Platt
other Bowers mmn Platt -
1843 Thomas
1845 William Henry
1846 Emma Jane

Not certain of the death of Ann, but there is a record in Ashton (Hollins is between Oldham and Ashton)
Ann Bowers March 1/4 1846, record no 137. There is a death of (yet another) William Henry, record no 133 March 1/4 1846, so Ann could have died soon after giving birth?

I think James was possibly born before 1837. The age difference on the two baptisms below ties in with the 1851 census.

Oldham St Mary's 11/2/1838
James, son of Charles and Anne
abode Hollins
occupation joiner

Oldham St Mary's 3/1/1836
Frances, father and mother as above

there is also John, 16/10/1831
father Charles, carpenter, mother Anne, abode Hollins

EDIT
I haven't come across a marriage of Charles Bowers and Ann Platt yet

your gg grandfather 'disappeared' at a similar time to my gg grandfather. There is a story in the family that he went to Australia in the Gold Rush, never to be seen again. He is on the 1861 census, his wife was a widow on the 1871. We have found that he sailed in 1862, and died 10 days after arriving in Australia.

I'll check my files to see how I came across the passenger list.

Thankyou very very kindly ***Crystal Tips***,This info may be the missing links as we have our James born 1838.He married Agnus Scott in Tasmania in 1869.Where they came in we're not sure.Ingrid has a shipping record of Agnus but unfortunately the vital pieces of info are covered? The thing is he is a carpenter, hence we have a James and father Charles as joiners who both dissappear off census around same time.Need to find when they left and if to Australia, the shipping record to confirm.Thankyou again and again. It seems to be coming together.jigsaw puzzles are always easier with help lol.Tah muchly
