trying to find ancesters of Ivy

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

David

David Report 20 Mar 2010 17:10

I am trying to find ancesters of Ivy Blount, late Ivy Quinney of Stoke Golding. Born in Tamworth c. 1910. Supposedly linked back to Thomas Guy founder of Tamworth Alms Houses and Guy's Hospital London.

Dave

Potty

Potty Report 20 Mar 2010 17:18

To start you on your way, this looks like her birth registration - the birth cert will give you both her parents' names and her father's occupation (Nuneaton covers Stoke Golding):

Births Sep 1913 (>99%)
Quinney Ivy Noon Nuneaton 6d 1284

Noon is her mother's maiden name.

You will probably be able to find her parents marriage registration on this site:

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

That cert will give you her parents' ages and their fathers' names and occupations and where they were living at the time.

You should then be able to trace them back on the census and bmds

Seems to be a bit of confusion here. I have assumed Blount was her married name and Quinney her maiden name whilst Catherine has assumed the opposite! Please can you confirm which is which?

Potty,
I just assumed if she was "late" Quinney, that that was her name when she died and therefore her married name.

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 20 Mar 2010 17:40

The hospital was founded in 1721 by Thomas Guy (1644/45–27 December 1724), a publisher of unlicensed Bibles who had made a fortune in the South Sea Bubble. It was originally established as a hospital to treat "incurables" discharged from St Thomas' Hospital. Guy had been a Governor and benefactor of St Thomas' and his fellow Governors supported his intention by granting the south-side of St Thomas' Street for a peppercorn for 999 years. Guy is interred in the crypt of the Chapel of his foundation.

Guy's has expanded over the centuries. The original buildings comprised a courtyard facing St Thomas Street, comprising hall on the east-side and on the west-side the Chapel, Matron's House and Surgeon's House. An two inner quadrangles divided by a cloister which was restyled and dedicated to the hospital's members who fell in World War I. The east-side comprising the care wards and the 'counting house', with the governors 'Burfoot Court Room' and the north-side quadrangle is dominated by a statue of Lord Nuffield who was the chairman of governors for many years and also a major benefactor. These original parts of the hospital are now administrative and social accommodation.

Despite substantial bomb damage during World War II, the original 18th century chapel remains intact including the tomb of Thomas Guy with a very fine marble sculpture by John Bacon.

The location of Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals c.1833A bequest of £200,000 by William Hunt in 1829, one of the largest charitable bequests in England in historic terms, allowed for a further hundred beds to be accommodated. Hunt's name was given to the southern expansion of the hospital buildings. These were replaced c.2000 by new academic buildings for King's College, known as New Hunt's House.
