I can find whom I believe to be my grandfather SAMUEL BIRD born around Manchester circa 1890, his father was called Edwin and mother Joanna (or Johanna or even Johannah). I can trace them in the 1891, 1901 amd 1911 census reports, but cannot find any marriage or birth records in BMD so that I can obtain certificates. |

None at all, I have searched a few years before and after Samuel was born for a marriage, but nothing. I can't find a marriage between Edwin and Joanna, nor a birth record for Samuel, this is after searching 15 years either way. |

Hey thanks to all who replied this has given me hope now of finding my grandfather etc. I never though of mis-spellings or even trying a phonetic search. |

Peter, the first thing that worries is me is that you only BELIEVE that your grandfather is Samuel Bird. Please tell me that you didn't mean to say that, but that you KNOW he is Samuel Bird, at least as far as it is possible to know. Otherwise we are going up the wrong tree. |
