Find Ancestors

I have a photograph of Victor Hermann Benzon with his wife Agnes Monica Matthews who were married in Croydon in 1919. Angnes is holding a baby called Peter Maxwell. I do not know if they fit into my family or whether it was just a family friend of my parents.

Is there anyone out there that knows of them?

I have tried searching other trees in the past but without success. I had thought that someone else may be in the same position as me and know of these people but cannot connect them to the family.

Victor and Agnes were married in 1919 -- but when might the photo have been taken?? Were they newlyweds or celebrating their golden anniversary? ;)

If you have an idea of the date it was taken, you can search for births that would fit a child of the age in the picture. That would give you both parents' surnames, and you could search for a marriage to match, which would at least tell you who the parents were. (If they were married -- looking just 1918-1925, there are several Peter Maxwells registered in their mothers' surname.)

The chance of anyone who actually knows these people / recognizes the names reading a post here is as close to zero as you can get, after all.

The photograph is in black and white. I would say that the couple are in their 50s/60s so probably taken around 1950. They are holding the baby Peter Maxwell - most probably at his Christening as he has a long white gown on. It could be their grandson assuming they had a daughter and she married a Maxwell.

You didn't search at FreeBMD for births to the couple? No need to assume / point in assuming.

They seem to have had one child, a boy, in 1928.

There is a birth in Croydon in 1951 that seems likely to be the person. I'll send you birth and parents' marriage details by private message.

I guess everyone would be me -- and I specifically didn't put that information in the thread, Janet, because it is personal info about a living person who hasn't been informed of or consented to his info being posted on the internet (and UK law prohibits the reproduction of details from certificates about living people).

Maybe you would delete it?

What you can do with the info I sent (including the parents' births) is search trees here at GR to see whether any family members are users of this site.

Thank you for the advice - you will see I have now deleted the living person info. I will continue to search GR as I feel there is a family connection here. My mother wrote on the back of the photo Aunt and Uncle so will still pursue.

You'd think, wouldn't you??

I think I gave you the births for Peter's parents. They would have been the age of Victor's and Agnes's children, so one might have thought Peter's parent was a niece or nephew of one of Victor or Agnes -- but neither of Peter's parents, and neither of Peter's parents' mothers, was a Benzon or a Cates, i.e. a brother or sister of Victor or Agnes.

Maybe go back one more generation -- Victor's and Agnes's parents, to see who their mothers were, and whether one of those surnames is, what, a parent or grandparent of a parent of Peter. I think I'll leave you to that -- no sleep last night and I can feel my brain boggling. ;)
