Find Ancestors

Hi, I wondered if anyone couls help with this...

My Gt Gt Gt Grandfather Charles Baumber, a Carter and Farm Labourer, was born in c1843 in Spalding , Lincs. He married Sarah Markham in 1863 in Lincs. The marriage cert states that his father, then deceased, was a Blacksmith called George Hutchinson, however I am unable to locate Charles prior to the 1871 census.
I just can't seem to work this one out.

I cannot find a marriage for a Charles Baumber and Sarah Markham on either freebmd or on familysearch.


Where did you find the information to get the marriage certificate??



The implication of him naming his father as George Hutchinson is that Charles was illegitimate, and may be claiming George as his father.

I'm with you now Nerine, I thought you had not been able to find the 1863 marriage as I note that Charles is not showing up on that reference on Ancestry + FreeBmd.

If she has the correct family mentioned above on the 1871, then she has the correct marriage cert.

However, as you have pointed out there are other marriages, so there must be other families with those names also.

We need to find Edward + Monie (Minnie)? on the 1851 ! - Was she his wife or his sister??? (Which would perhaps explain George's presence?)

Thanks Dea and Sylvia for all your help. In answer to some of your questions:

Sarah Markham and Charles Baumber were named as the parents on my Gt Gt Grandmothers birth cert, she was Elizabeth Baumber b1868.

Sarah Markham I have on the 1851, 71, 81, 91 census, can't find her in 1861.

I think Sarah had two other children before marrying Charles in 1863, they are called Alfred and Jane Markham as in the census she and Charles have children with the surname Baumber and Markham. Therefore I don't think she married the Markham childrens father as in the census when she was a child she was called Markham. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks again for all your help, it's greatly appreciated. With this family I've just gone blank when thinking about it. It would be far easier if everyone would have married ;)

well, I solved one part of the marriage registration problem that I had in finding them

I entered year, vol and page number and registration district as given by Ruth and got this:-

Marriages Dec 1863 (>99%)

No other names show



but when asked for Charles, Dec 1863, Lincolnshire, this record came up

This looks like Charles in 1861. Birthplace Surfleet which is close to Spalding and he's woprking in Helpringham which is where Sarah lives.
