Trying to find parents of Abraham Arkwright

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Hi,

I am trying to find parents or siblings of Abraham Arkwight b 1788c married a Mary Thomson (2nd marriage) born 1774 c, they had a son Richard Arkwright born 1831 died 1911.

Abraham died in 1858 in Ashton where I believe he was born.

Any help in tracing siblings and parents would be a great help as I am stuck!

It helps to have the correct details.

Did you mean died in Aston (Warwickshire) not AsHton (Lancashire)

Deaths Sep 1858 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Arkwright Abraham - Aston 6d 179

I believe it is Warwickshire and it is his parents and siblings I am struggling to find.

Thank you

Son Richard with his mother

Household:1881

Richard ARKWRIGHT Head M Male 48 Warwick, Warwick, England Engine Fitter
Ann ARKWRIGHT Wife M Female 42 Deeping St James, Lincoln, England
Emily E. ARKWRIGHT Daur Female 9 London, Middlesex, England Scholar
Charles ARKWRIGHT Son Male 7 London, Middlesex, England Scholar
Frederick G. ARKWRIGHT Son Male 3 Stratford, Essex, England
>>>>>>>>> Mary ARKWRIGHT Mother W Female 86 Aylesworth, Buckingham, England
Arthur WILLIAMS Nephew U Male 23 Birmingham, Warwick, England Engine Fitter

Dwelling 25 Milkwood Road
Census Place Lambeth, Surrey, England

If this is Mary nee Thompson, her DOB is more like 1795 than 1774.
Which would make more sense than her having a child at the age of 56/57

Hi,

I believe you are correct in the dates, - I am unsure if Thomson is her birth name or that of her first marriage.

Appreciate your help - thank you.

on reading this ... maybe you would give the sources of your information?

place of death spelled incorrectly (what Mike meant was that he *wasted* five minutes looking in the wrong place), date of birth wildly incorrect ...

if you identify the sources it can help to tell whether the information is worth using to search with, or just comes from some nonesensical 'hint' from Ancestry or the like.

I do love Ancestry

1851 census

Abraham Askratt 63
Mary Askratt 59

Richard Askratt 20

actually it's not all Ancestry's fault, the original seems to say ACKRATT

He is a blacksmith, does this square with the info on Richard's marriage certificate perhaps?

Appreciate this - I have apologised and said I did appreciate the help.

The birth details have been passed down the family on some scraggy bits of paper - all other information to this point has so far been incorrect, and therefore did not question it. However, as has been pointed out the date of birth and place are widly incorrect.

I am sorry - and do appreciate Mike taking the time to look.

Thank you - I never looked at that variation of spelling tried lots - blacksmith yes that ties in -

Wow - fab - really really appreciate your help.

I gave up on variations in spelling ! just searched for Richard in Warwickshire borh 1831 +/- 2 years with parents Abraham and Mary ....... and then you scan down the list and think

hmm, Askratt, that is not really a name is it, lol ......

no such luck in 1841 so far though

It does place him as being from Lancashire though, entirely coincidentally, and there seem to be many Arkwrights from that area

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 8 Feb 2011 00:06

Here is an Abraham in 1841 and a spanner in your works perhaps

I wonder whether Richard was not Abraham's son, but Mary's

Name: Abraham Arkwright
Age: 45
Estimated birth year: abt 1796
Gender: Male

Civil Parish: Manchester
Hundred: Salford
County/Island: Lancashire
Registration district: Ashton under Lyne

Abraham Arkwright 45
Anna Arkwright 50
Mary Arkwright 20
Elizabeth Arkwright 15
Anna Arkwright 15
Catherine Arkwright 15

.... but .... that one's occupation is Spinner (or Spinnner, it says), and in fact it says he was not born in county

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 8 Feb 2011 00:11

There may be something to that name in 1851

here they are in 1841

Abraham Ackratt 53
Mary Ackratt 47
Abraham Ackratt 16
John Ackratt 14
Richard Ackratt 9

Civil Parish: Aston
Hundred: Birmingham
County/Island: Warwickshire
Country: England
Registration district: Aston
Sub-registration district: Deritend and Bordesley

Ancestry has them muddled up with households they don't belong to

Abraham is Smith J (I think the J i s for journeyman) and it says No for born in county for both him and Mary, that is Warwickshire

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 8 Feb 2011 00:14

That surname did get used a little

these are the only occurrences in the indexes

I wonder whether the first one is Abraham's son John

HI,

Yes I am told that the family originated from Manchester - Bolton area so Lancashire close by so entirely possible, however, I have yet to make the link until you have posted ?

All the generations to Abraham have flowed then Abraham - well he has got me totally stuck! Mary, Elizabeth are all family names through the generations and the age of Mary and Abraham when they had Richard does appear to make them older parents with no children in their early 20'2 and 30's so this trace does make it appear probable. Mary was previously married - again do not know whether Thomson is her first married name or maiden name. However, to make it confusing the family trades do appear to be blacksmith, engine fitters and spinners - so this make any of this possible?

I do appreciate your help as I was so stuck. This has become frustrating for me.

Many Thanks

This last post is correct I believe as Mary was indeed born in Aylesworth (sp?) Bucks, and the children from Richard are called Abraham, John and Richard - therefore the famliy tradition with names?

Also, I have in my history that some of the family did indeed live in Wandsworth, but no record of Sarah ...mmm .

The family in 1841 and 1851 are the only two occurrences of the name

a*kratt

in any census so I think those people in Aston in the indexes must be theirs.

yes, this would be Rose Emma ARkwright in 1861

Name: Rosa M E Arkwright
Age: 7
Estimated birth year: abt 1854
Relation: Boarder
Gender: Female
Where born: Birmingham, Warwickshire, England

Civil Parish: St Marylebone
Ecclesiastical parish: St Paul
County/Island: Middlesex

with mother

Name: Sarah Arkwright unmarried
Age: 39
Estimated birth year: abt 1822
Relation: Servant
Gender: Female
Where born: Warwick, Warwickshire, England

and then it would be she, Sarah, who married in Wandswirth in 1863 I would think

but there's no Sarah in your lot .... oh, maybe there is, born 1822, she just wasn't at home any longer in 1841.
