The Retreat - Mere, Wiltshire

Margaret Report 27 Sep 2007 20:20

This was a Maternity Home in Mere in Wiltshire for unmarried mothers run by Alice and Francis Rutter from 1916 - 1926. This was an amazing establishment that opened their door to 300 girls in the 10 years it was open, and was supported by donations from various religious organisations.

If there is anyone out there that believes any of their ancestors may have disappeared on the pretence of going into service when they had the misfortune to get themselves pregnant, may like to contact me as I have done extensive research.

Unfortunatley I do not have any names but plenty of pen pictures form reports produced. Due to the delicate nature of illegitimacy in the first world war not much info exists.

I look forward to hearing from you

Margaret
