Nicola'S Report 11 Apr 2024 22:30

Henry Harding was born c.1806 and died tragically near St. Kitts in 1843 leaving a ten year old son of the same name and at least one daughter.

Henry Harding junior was born c.1833 on Nevis, West Indies. I have ALL details about him until his untimely death, etc., so please don't take up your valuable time on that!!

However, I cannot find Henry Harding senior's wife/Henry Harding junior's mother. I know that she survived her husband. It is very possible that her first name was JESSE/JESSIE. I would be very grateful for any details about her.

Many thanks.

Nicola'S Report 11 Apr 2024 23:27

After Henry Harding senior's death in 1843, perhaps his young widow and child/children would have come to the UK. Since her husband had held a British Government position on Nevis, it probably wouldn't have been possible for her to remain??

Henry Harding junior is to be found in 1851/1861/1871 censuses and married and died in the UK.

But I can find no trace of his widowed mother ?JESSE/JESSIE?

For our reference -

is this Henry junior in 1851? At 36 Cannon Street?

Ancestry's transcription has mixed this household up with the household at number 35.
I've omitted the incorrect extra people here.

ArgyllGran Report 12 Apr 2024 00:05

???

"The four Huggins children would have been Elizabeth, who was baptised in 1824, Edward John, who was born in about 1825;
Charles Pinney, who was born in October 1829, and Peter Thomas, who was baptised on 22 February 1833 – a week before his nephew Henry, the son of his sister Jessie with Henry Harding (NHCS, St Thomas Lowland Baptisms 1827-1873 No 298 and 299)"
https://seis.bristol.ac.uk/~emceee/mountravers~part2chapter7.pdf
(see footnote to page 880)

I assume that means Henry junior was nephew of the father of the Huggins children, whose name was also Peter Thomas Huggins.
In which case Henry's mother must have been Jessie Huggins.

Another footnote in same page:

"17 July 1830. Jessie married Henry Harding, the collector of HM Customs"

In a footnote to page 881:

"Henry Harding was baptised on 22 February 1833 (NHCS, St Thomas Lowland Baptisms 1827-1873 No 299)."

Another mention (in footnote to page 901):

"Peter Thomas Huggins’s daughter Jessey was married for the second time. Her first husband, Henry Harding, had died, and in
February 1851 she married a man from St John Figtree, Charles Kenney (NHCS, St Thomas Lowland Marriages 1828-1965 No 308)."

It appears therefore that Jessie did not go to England.
Maybe young Henry was sent for schooling ??

I never fail to be grateful and amazed at the lengths you all go to in support of a posted new thread. I thought that I was 'reasonable' at this family history research lark but you all seem to know all the extraordinary nicks and crannies to reveal the answers! Where/how do you find all these references?? Honestly, it's quite humbling.

To try to answer some of the above questions: I have subscriptions to Ancestry [not worldwide], FMP, and then make use of the free ones - LDS/Free BMD etc. plus Google of course. That is where I discovered the circumstances of the unfortunate death aged 37 of HH senior and also a sister of HH junior who is buried in the same location. Yes, ArgyllGran to yours of 23.46.

The Mountravers document is historically interesting but doesn't cast the leading actors in a very good light. Crikey, I wouldn't want to be a present day descendant of old Huggins with that CV.

I don't know where the suggestion that HH junior's mother was Jessie. Probably one of those family whispers and now you have confirmed it. THANK YOU. I had thought that she probably would have remarried and probably upon her return to the UK. Thank you again.

Tricky with the first names being repeated down through the generations. I've drawn myself a rough tree to keep track before I commit it all to our records.

HH junior's only daughter baptised Beatrice Jessie, but seems to have been known as Jessie Beatrice, never married and lived with her widowed mother in considerable style until the latter died. She died in Peckham House Psychiatric Hospital in London. Administration of her Will was granted to two significant family members.

Where did you find HH junior's baptism, please? It would help me to know please and then if I could have found that myself I could have saved you all the bother because lo and behold there is the elusive first/maiden/second married name!!!

My apologies for not coming back to this earlier today. Firstly I wanted to take in all that you have found and then - our daughter-in-law's mother died ................ Such is 'family history'. :-(

This has been a fascinating reveal and thank you ALL again. :-) :-)

I am confused - and it doesn't take much:

There are two suggestions above as to whom Jessey Harding, nee Huggins may have married for her second marriage??

Either CHARLES KENNEY or FRANCIS LLEWELYN LLOYD.

It would seem to be the latter judging by the data which follows? In which case, who is CHARLES KENNEY!!

:-S

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 15 Apr 2024 22:23

No, there are not two suggestions for one woman.

Jessey Harding, WIDOW, married KENNEY………in St Kitts

Her DAUGHTER, spinster, married LLOYD, in England ……….note her age at death
