I found this census . but cannot find Edward or Elizabeth Hopkins in 1901 or 1891 . The 1911 census says they have been married 23 years . I am trying to check if Elizabeth Hopkins and The Mother-in -law Elizabeth Thomas are the same people who are on the 1881 census in Bridgend

I've added the bridgend census on my post . The ages of the mother and daughter are right . also the family names Margaret and Anne, but I notice that Elizabeth the daughter is listed as born in Killay in1911 and Bridgend in1881.

friendlywelshdragon Report 19 Jan 2013 17:58

Tried to find birth or baptism of William H Huxtable /Thomas . No Huxtable but found two William H thomas for 1881 One Apl-May- june , one Jul -Aug Sep The census was 3rd April and he is listed as 1 month old on that so both are too late . Cannot find Baptism for Apl- May- june . found Baptism for July- Aug- Sep 1886 but mother is wrong .

What makes it more difficult is the Thomas Name
. . Margarets maiden name was Thomas .
In 1886 she married George Thomas from Swansea (Different family)Also the family that Great-grandad claimed that his real father( not Huxtable) was from were Thomas

Yes . the Elizabeth Thomas I was looking for is here in 1881 marked with****
She was my great grandfathers, grandmother . Tried to find her hoping to find her husband but cannot find records for either in cemeterys in Bridgend .Trying to find the husband hasn't been possible because of the ages given on the different census She was born in Swansea so I thought she might have gone back there as the daughters name and age fits . But I know she was in Bridgend in 1891 and 1901 .1881 census transcription details for: 131, Nolton St, Lower Coyty

Vicci Report 26 Nov 2012 08:14

seem to be on the right track with John Thomas b.1879 aka Alfred John Huxtable and Geogre thomas (the younger) being half brothers
their mother being Margaret daughter of John and Elizabeth

Margaret married George Thomas and it seems he took on William Huxstable as his own (he appears with the family in 1891 as William Thomas, but John remained with his grandparents. all living on the same street in 1891 (Nolton st)

can you post all the details of the John Thomas and Elizabeth Richards marriage ? just to re-check

friendlywelshdragon Report 26 Nov 2012 08:55

Hi Vicci . It's the marriage of John Thomas and Elizabeth Richards that I am trying to trace. The 1911 census says the were married 14 years, which would make it 1837 . I got a certificate for that year in Cardiff for a John thomas and Elizabeth Anne Richards , but the dates are too far out . John is 29 and Elizabeth 26 and John's father is Thomas Thomas.and as we know now John's father whould be named as either George Thomas or John Huxtable .

This is the 1911 census

Edited the other post . Hope I haven't taken out any important clues .Is there a way to join the threads to make more sense .
The other threads were a few years ago . ileft it and came back to it .
John Thomas (birth certificate Alfred John Huxtable ) and William Thomas were both born before their mother married .so cannot trace their true father(s)
with any certainty .
Family stories and writing in Johns bible say histrue father was one of the Thomas family from Sutton manor Llandow Cowbridge where his mother was a servant and that Huxtable was a gardener paid to put his name on the birth certificate . But there is no way I know of proving that.
So have been trying to trace his mothers side . Difficulty there is his mothers father's age . It is so widely different on the census that there is no way of tracing the correct one . .
