I have just spoken to Michelle (grand daughter of Albert Stanley McCarthy) and he is the same Sergeant Albert Stanley McCarthy died 07/07/1946 and buried at Abney Park. So according to the CWGC transcript found by Londonbelle, I have been looking for the wrong parents, will now have to get the birth cert for Albert, like I should have done in the first place. When will I learn you can't cut corners with genealogy. Thanks all once again for your wise words.

Thanks for all your help will take me awhile to go through it all and I will speak to Gt Grand daughter of Thomas, Albert Stanley McCarthy was her grandfather and there were certainly some burials at Abney Park. Michelle McCarthy( Grand daughter of Albert) does not know much about her McCarthy ancestors, which is reason for my research.

I'm going to throw another McCarthy/Hayes marriage into the ring.

It is that of Joseph McCarthy and Sibylla Margaret Yoxall nee Hayes in Mar Qtr 1930 which I think could be the Joseph & Margaret mentioned above.

This is how I have come to my conclusion:

Sibylla Margaret Hayes was born in Mar Qtr 1880 Shoreditch

Sibylla Margaret married Richard Yoxall in Mar Qtr 1897 in Shoreditch.
Sibylla & Richard had two children Charlotte Agnes and Henry Richard.

Henry Richard Yoxall was born in 1900 and he joined the Army on 10 June 1918.
Henry gave his Mother, Mrs Margaret Yoxall, 55 Pritchard's Road, Hackney as his Next of Kin.

On the 1920 Electoral Roll
Joseph and Margaret McCarthy are living at 55 Prichard's Road.

Margaret's husband Richard Yoxall dies in Mar Qtr 1928 in Poplar.

So I am thinking that perhaps Sibylla Margaret was also known as Margaret and that she seperates from her husband Richard Yoxall.

Margaret lives with Joseph McCarthy, as wife and husband, and they have a family. Margaret marries Joseph in 1930 as she is now legally free to do so as Richard Yoxall died in 1928.

The reason why I ask is that I would have thought that if Albert was born prior to marriage his surname would be ' Hayes' and not ' McCarthy'.

Also I have found the following death on the CWGC site

Sergeant Albert Stanley McCarthy
Death 07/07/1946
Age 32
Regiment/Service No Royal Irish Fusiliers/7045457
Buried Abney Park Cemetery (located in the North London District of Stoke Newington, near the main railway station).

Additional Information: Son of Joseph & Margaret McCarthy; husband of Alice McCarthy, Islington

Nicola Report 14 Apr 2014 23:04

Looking for family of Albert S McCarthy born 1914 Bethnal Green, I think Albert's parents were Thomas McCarhty and Johannah Hayes married in 1918, Shoreditch.
Any help with finding siblings of Albert or finding parents Thomas McCarhty and Johannah Hayes on 1911 census, they must of been in the Bethnal Green area?

Chris :)

Can I ask how you know that Albert Stanley B 1914 is the son of Thomas & Johannah?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 27 Aug 2015 00:39

I asked if Thomas served in WW1 because that could explain the years between the birth of their child in 1914 and their marriage in 1918.

I would have expected that wold possibly have been at least one or two more children during those 4 years if he had been still in England, or an earlier marriage.

Nicola Report 26 Aug 2015 22:21

Thanks all, waiting on marriage cert, just thought I would do some inquiries while waiting...Confused about the distance between where Johannah was living in 1911 and her marriage in Shoreditch. I know London well and Southwark and Shoreditch are by no means close to each other. Will be patient and wait for the cert.
Thanks for all your help.
