He walked out on her one day and left her a pauper with a young child. Her older children took her in. She died in 1968 and I'd like to think she was a strong woman too. I appreciate all of your help, thank you

Oh no- Albert abandoned her? What a tough life and a sad story. She must have been a strong woman.

Poor old Rachel, didn't have much luck. Her mother died and her husband abandoned her and her children! Never did find out why though.

1891 Mary Jane Aston b1867 Bilston, is a servant in Blackpool for Thomas and Mary Jane Wilkinson.

Gritty Report 26 Aug 2015 16:53

So to recap- William Aston married Rachel E Newell in 1886.

They had at least one daughter, Rachel Ellen Aston, born in 1887.

Rachel's mother was put into an asylum in Staffordshire in 1890, and is shown there on the 1891 census.

Rachel (known as Nellie) is listed with her father and Aston Grandparents in 1891.

In 1894 Rachel's mother is transferred to an asylum in Northampton, where she dies in June 1898.

In 1900 William remarries to widow Catherine Davies (nee Watterson) and has 4 children born in Handsworth.

Meanwhile, Rachel/ Nellie is packed of to Lancashire to live with her Aunt Mary Jane, but has returned to Handsworth by 1910 where she marries Albert Currell.

And- to top it off, William's brother, Robert G, married Maria. Maria was listed as a witness on William and Rachel's marriage cert. :-)

Nellie is often used in place of Ellen. Also in 1911 Rachel Ellen gives her place of birth as Bilston, which also fits with above 'Nellie'.

Who were the witnesses on Rachel Ellen's marriage to Albert Currell?

This is the same family in 1881:

In 1901 Nellie is living with her Aunt Mary J- meaning that Nellie is a child of her brothers- so could be William's daughter:

I'm wondering about this man- he's listed as a widower, but, it may have been easier that explaining his wife was in a lunatic asylum. The details match the details he gave on his marriage to Rachel Ellen:

1891 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
Wolverhampton Street, Bilston, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England

Wm Aston Head Married Male 51 1840 Iron Shingler Bilston, Staffordshire, England
Sarah Ann Aston Wife Married Female 51 1840 - Bilston, Staffordshire, England
Wm Aston Son Widower Male 26 1865 Iron Moulder Bilston, Staffordshire,
James Aston Son Single Male 15 1876 Shop Assistant Bilston, Staffordshire,
Edith Aston Daughter Single Female 12 1879 - Bilston, Staffordshire, England
Flora Aston Daughter - Female 3 1888 - Bilston, Staffordshire, England
Nellie Aston Daughter - Female 4 1887 - Bilston, Staffordshire, England
Willie Aston Grandson - Male 0 1891 - Bilston, Staffordshire, England

Wondered if Nellie was William's daughter Rachel Ellen? Need to look into it a bit more

Gritty

Gritty Report 26 Aug 2015 14:51

The William Aston that married Lydia Whitehouse didn't have a daughter called Rachel.
