I don't know if this will help ,or confuse things even more . The family story is this . Alfred John and his brother William Henry were both born before the marriage of Margaret and George Thomas Margaret's maiden name was also Thomas .On the birth certificates Alfred Johns father is given as John Huxtable but three months later he is baptised as Alfred John Thomas. William's father is not named . William is two years younger . In later years Alfred John told some of grandchildren that despite the name on his birth certificate his ,and William's true father was one of the Thomas family from Sutton Farm / Manor . and that John Huxtable was a gardener, who was paid to give his name as the father . In those days the Thomas family were a rich family who farmed half the vale .
Interesting to see the Morgan name on George's family . At the time Alfred John and William were born , the head of Sutton Farm was Edward Thomas who was Married to Jane Morgan. from Saint Brides Major . Also on Alfred John's birth certificate it says Margaret is a domestic servant Aber House . only Aber house I can trace is in Pricetown Nantymoel . At that time there was a Morgan family there , but they were from Montgomeryshire and I haven't been able to find any link . so could be a co-incidence.

On Alfred John's marriage certificate it gives his father's name as Alfred John Thomas the same as his own . His mother and stepfather had both passed away before he married .

In1901 Alfred Johns younger half brother George worked at Sutton Farm

I'm struggling with this family- SO many Thomas family!

I see that Alfred John (John) was brought up by his Grandparents, and in 1891 is living with his Grandmother a couple of doors up from his half siblings in Chapel Street.

This record fits his date of birth (and presumably 'John' is his Grandfather?)

Hi Gritty . You have been busy . I do have the birth certificates for Alfred John and William
Here are the details . 4th February 1879 Cowbridge Alfred John Name of Father : John Huxtable Name of Mother: Margaret Thomas ,a domestic Servant occupation of father :Gardener Signature Description and residence of informant . John Huxtable Father . Cowbridge . M Thomas mother Aber House Port Talbot
Registered 18th March 1879 registrar William John

10th March 1881 William . Father ------- Mother; Margaret Thomas General Servant signature of informant ; Margaret Thomas. ,Oldcastle ,Bridgend .
Registered 26th April 1881 registrar Thomas Jenkins

One puzzle with John Huxtable is Cowbridge is 25-30 miles from Port Talbot . and the only Aber House I have been able to trace is in Price town Nantymoel . which was a colliery agents house . so had different families at various times .

I know it will not be possible to prove the story about the true father being from Sutton farm (unless there is a mention in a will or other document) but the relatives who remember my great grandfather say he was a very truthful man . Also he told them that one of the family from the farm emigrated to America . and I have found shipping records that could prove this . . and a def'inate record of Hugh Thomas in Canada .
John Huxtable married and moved to Yorkshire , if I have the right one .
Would be interesting to know if Margarette Morgan (George's mother) Is related to Jane Morgan wife of Edward Thomas , although this is going out of the family line .
