In 1911, Edward and Mary claimed to have been married for 20 years........

Bessie's birth pre-dates that 'marriage', and isn't recorded as 'Stamp'

Births Mar 1888 (>99%)
BALL Bessie Emily Chard 5c 410

That fits with the LODGER in 1911, whose name is actually Bertie BALL

He was with an Annie in 1901 but Mary in 1891 & 1911 - did he live a dual life?

The 1891 census was taken 5 April so a couple of months after that newspaper article.

His wives per the census:

1891 - Mary born 1851 Bristol
1901 - Annie born 1871 Chard
1911 - Mary born 1861 Bristol (obviously lopped a lot of years off to hide the age difference).

Certainly looks as though he left Mary for Annie but then went back to her.

As previously mentioned, Mary seems to have lopped years off her age on the 1911, the 1891 and the 1901 both show her born 1851.

I think it's highly unlikely she is the mother of 1 year old William who is on the 1911, I think it's also unlikely she's the mother of the younger children.

I think Florence May could be the daughter called Mary on the 1911, but shown with her correct name on the 1901:

I would certainly be buying a copy of that 1890 marriage cert to check it out, but I do think it's them. I can't find a death that fits for a Mary Gowing post 1881, and can't find anyone that fits on the 1891.

I don't think Edward James Stamp had any children at all with Mary - the 1871 & 1881 census shows her to have been born 1846/1847 so she was even older than originally thought - no way did she have a baby in 1910 at around age 64. The children born and died next to her name on the 1911 quite possible relate to her first marriage.

So what happened to Annie? I did find this marriage:

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Jun 1902 )
Ball Annie Chard 5c 648
Beviss Fred Chard 5c 648
Smith Harry Chard 5c 648
Turner Kate Chard 5c 648

The 1911 confirms Fred Beviss married Kate Turner. I haven't the patience to check out all of the Annie Smiths in the 1911.

But if that marriage was right then who was popping out the Stamp children?

This death might be closer to the truth, age wise:

Deaths Dec 1919
Stamp Mary 75 Cardiff 11a 419
